Bump. Any hints after a year?

The school's computer system crashed that day. Teacher had a no late assignments policy and half the class hadn't printed yet. Printing has never been so stressful. I guess compared to them, my situation wasn't that bad. XD Great riddle though.

Ooh. So cyan 6, turquoise 10. Things started going a lot better once I had the odds and evens split and stopped using the standard grid. I think a large part of the challenge was having so many variables on a grid that if you make one mistake, it won't be immediately apparent. At that point, it's been easier to start over than pin down the mistake and all the ones based off of it.

Ooh. Dividing by 0. My physics teacher did that once. Still not sure how. I can see how y-1=0 knowing the solution already. But how is that known to be 0 before the solution? What made you pick y-1 as opposed to anything else?

@FUZZYI think he means if you list out their ages in order, there will be no repetition and no gaps. So ages 1-19, 2-20, 3-21, etc. Sum of ages, I would assume applies to eldest sons, not all males. In araver's solution, S is the sum of ages, X is the oldest son in the village, and Y appears to be the youngest. I'm not sure where the y-1 came from. If you don't get that either, here's another way of looking at it using the same 3 original equations. Probably just a slightly longer form of his solution. @araver Maybe a typo. 10*(Y-1)+10*19 = S = 19*(Y-1) + 19*10 The "10*19"s cancel along with the "(y-1)"s leaving 10=19?

That would be nice. I tried 3 or so times and I'm convinced there's either a contradiction or I'm misinterpreting one of the clues. If I remember correctly, my problem keeps having something to do with Kenya and HK.

A while back, I made a family tree. Several generations back, I found a single person in more than one person's line. It might have been an error. 2^N ancestors in a generation assumes no one had children with their sibling, cousin, or otherwise related person. Apparently, in my tree, someone married a relative. The same assumption is made for 2^N descendants. Interesting wiki page. Never heard of that before.

I was addressing the first line about the potential for overpopulation. Not the question itself.

In terms of overpopulation, let's start with one couple. They have two children. If they were the only family in the world, they'd have to have the children together. So instead of doubling, the next generation would still only have two people. Two people are giving birth to two people. Later generations repeat. Assuming each couple has one boy and girl. Eventually the older generations will die so while the population would increase at first, you'd eventually hit a limit. Maybe 3 or 4 generations. Obviously there's more than one couple in the world but I would think each generation would have the same number as the previous. To increase the population after 3 or 4 generations, someone needs to have more than two children.

Depending on when your country switched over, it could be up to 13 I think not yet accounting for the date line and leap days!
