Are the police still digging or did they just give up?
  2. Thalia

Point taken. Either way, 56 is not anywhere near the greatest value. So as curr3nt has put it, the highest value is greater than or equal to 40321. @curr3nt: Any idea how to prove what the greatest value is?
  3. Thalia

You can get at least 60480 by adding 1 and 2 and multiplying the rest. I don't know if that is the maximum.

    I made a table of squares. Starting from the bottom (44^2), I subtracted and looked for two squares that would fit the remainder. 44^2=1936. 1989-1936=53. 53=49+4. 44, 7, 2. I found that going down by twos worked. 42^2, 40^2, 38^2, etc. 42^2=1764. 1989-1764=225. Find two sqares that equal 225. 1 1 2 4 3 9 4 16 5 25 6 36 7 49 8 64 9 81 10 100 11 121 12 144 13 169 14 196 15 225 16 256 17 289 18 324 19 361 20 400 21 441 22 484 23 529 24 576 25 625 26 676 27 729 28 784 29 841 30 900 31 961 32 1024 33 1089 34 1156 35 1225 36 1296 37 1369 38 1444 39 1521 40 1600 41 1681 42 1764 43 1849 44 1936
  5. Look for any religious fanatic groups in the area.

What is the exact text of the problem?
  7. Thalia

Maybe I'm missing something but doesn't that give you 1989=1989?
  8. Thalia

Well, the formula would be a^2+b^2+c^2=1989. I have no clue how you would solve that though.
  9. Thalia

Does the problem just say 3 positive integers or does it specify consecutive or multiples?
  10. Read the articles and find out as much information as you can about the cops that are mentioned. See if you can find a connection between the articles.

"Seems" is an understatement. Check phone directories for the wall number.
  12. Thalia

Yes. So it is (81?17)/4?14=2. The ? are both the same operation. That should rule out multiplication and probably division. That leaves. . . I assume that means you got the other ones?
  13. Thalia

I'm not sure if you need 3 or 5. I think this is just trial and error. I'll give you certain pieces and let you figure out the rest. (17-14)?2+4?9=1 (9^2?17)/4?14=2 4*9?14-17?2=3 (17-14?9)/4?2=5 If you still need help, I'll give you a little more. There are probably other possibilities besides these.

I need to read those again sometime. If that is the intended answer, someone else may post the next quote since I just did one.
  15. Thalia

    No but good guess.

"This system is calibrated to the Celsius metric system." Blablah99:So where is the quote from?
  17. Who were the employees working with Sarah? Any connections to the Knight family in the past?
  18. Thalia

Well, good luck. Unless there is an alternative meaning for the * or you can add other symbols, it doesn't look like it's going to work. One thing you could experiment with is putting parentheses between the numbers. 2(1) instead of 21 so it equals 2. Another thing to consider is replacing the / with the division sign (the line with 2 dots). I'm still not getting anything from that but maybe you will.
  19. Thalia

Does the original problem use the * or the multiplication x? I don't think it makes a difference but just in case. . .
