Point taken. Either way, 56 is not anywhere near the greatest value. So as curr3nt has put it, the highest value is greater than or equal to 40321. @curr3nt: Any idea how to prove what the greatest value is?

You can get at least 60480 by adding 1 and 2 and multiplying the rest. I don't know if that is the maximum.

I made a table of squares. Starting from the bottom (44^2), I subtracted and looked for two squares that would fit the remainder. 44^2=1936. 1989-1936=53. 53=49+4. 44, 7, 2. I found that going down by twos worked. 42^2, 40^2, 38^2, etc. 42^2=1764. 1989-1764=225. Find two sqares that equal 225. 1 1 2 4 3 9 4 16 5 25 6 36 7 49 8 64 9 81 10 100 11 121 12 144 13 169 14 196 15 225 16 256 17 289 18 324 19 361 20 400 21 441 22 484 23 529 24 576 25 625 26 676 27 729 28 784 29 841 30 900 31 961 32 1024 33 1089 34 1156 35 1225 36 1296 37 1369 38 1444 39 1521 40 1600 41 1681 42 1764 43 1849 44 1936

Well, the formula would be a^2+b^2+c^2=1989. I have no clue how you would solve that though.

Does the problem just say 3 positive integers or does it specify consecutive or multiples?

Yes. So it is (81?17)/4?14=2. The ? are both the same operation. That should rule out multiplication and probably division. That leaves. . . I assume that means you got the other ones?

I'm not sure if you need 3 or 5. I think this is just trial and error. I'll give you certain pieces and let you figure out the rest. (17-14)?2+4?9=1 (9^2?17)/4?14=2 4*9?14-17?2=3 (17-14?9)/4?2=5 If you still need help, I'll give you a little more. There are probably other possibilities besides these.

Well, good luck. Unless there is an alternative meaning for the * or you can add other symbols, it doesn't look like it's going to work. One thing you could experiment with is putting parentheses between the numbers. 2(1) instead of 21 so it equals 2. Another thing to consider is replacing the / with the division sign (the line with 2 dots). I'm still not getting anything from that but maybe you will.

Does the original problem use the * or the multiplication x? I don't think it makes a difference but just in case. . .
