  1. On dark and stormy night, Sh3rlock_Holm3s was reclining in front of a blazing fireplace (which was the screensaver on the computer), reading the following PM on the forum at 221BBakerStreet.com:

    Urgent: Please help!

Hi, I am in a lot of trouble, and I remembered reading about you in a blog, and I thought that you might be able to help me.

Six months ago, after a terrible break-up with my long-time GF, I joined this "religious organization" calling themselves The Circle of Eziam. But now I realize that it's actually a cult, but I fear it may be too late. They will not allow me to leave until I've passed their so called Final Test, and they have made me leave all my assets to them in my will.

Tonight, the Oracle of Eziam brought us to the Sacred Waters (which is actually their private olympic sized swimming pool), and told us that tomorrow, we will have the Final Test. He said "I will pray to the great God Eziam to bless these waters tonight. Tomorrow, you must cross the Sacred Waters on foot. Those who are fervently devoted shall be allowed to pass, those whose devotion is found to be lackluster will be swallowed up in the Sacred Waters." Then he bid us to go and pray well in our rooms, and not to disturb him in his prayers.

I don't know what's going to happen, but I fear for my life. Please, tell me what I should do in the test tomorrow!

Sh3rlock_Holm3s took a sip of black coffee, then hit the reply button. The advice was one word:

    Run.

The next day Sh3rlock_Holm3s was browsing the a news page and saw a story about a cult leader being arrested for attempting to murder his disciples. One of the disciples and gone and told all the others what to do for the final test, and then, after passing the test, left and went to the police.

Sh3rlock_Holm3s smiled. Time for some cookies.

The question to all the readers at home, then, is: why did Sh3rlock_Holm3s give that advice?

It has to do with what the cult leader did to the water...the great God Eziam indeed "blessed" it...

    ;)
  2. If Awesomeville was awesome, then what is Pengville? Freezing? I could use it in this desert. If I really want to cool off, I can go up to the capital but thats a long drive. I hope I can pick up a Klondike bar at the drive-thru. :)

    Actually, what Pengville is is

black and white and red all over! (well, it *will* be red at least...

    :P)
  3. .314 is equivalent to .314000… with infinite 0s. The probability of choosing a single 0 starting at a given point is .1. The probability of choosing 2 is .01. One minus this is .99. So as in my other example, we see that the probability of it having infinite 0s at that point is 0. You have to consider the 0s at the end because to do otherwise would be to say that a certain 3 digit decimal is more likely than a specific 20 digit one, meaning it wouldn’t be random. So since the probability of any one value being chosen is 0, we see that the probability of the digits of the randomly chosen number being able to be expressed using the atoms of the universe is 0. So although .314 is as likely as any other value to be chosen, the probability is 0.

Actually, since he has already chosen .314 (i.e. the event has already been observed), the probability of him choosing .314 is 1. ;P

  4. isn't it a bit of a problem that 'coal' can be CoAl or COAl? this type of encryption would need to have a pre-set value system to work. For instance: always use the largest or smallest summation. sorry if this has already been addressed, i only discovered these puzzles last night and they are very good despite this inconsistency. i like #9 the best. 10 and 12 though... hmmm.

edit: i wouldn't say #3 was an easy one b/c

it was some kind of 'lesson'. I tried every lesson i could think of and actually came within 12 and 5, but never 160 exactly. i think you were a bit misleading when you told Ben it meant 'lesser than' in post 92. I took that too literally.

Well, if the puzzle went from word-> number there would need to be a preset, since there could be more than one possible answer, but since the puzzle it to go from number -> word, I just have to choose a way to do a particular word, and when you have a word in mind, you try to figure out the possible values and see if one fits, if one does, then it is the answer (or an answer I didn't think of ;P).

Lol...the math part is supposed to be taking math and "putting it into plain english" so most of them are taking the mathematical operator and finding a word that means the same thing, such as ellipse->oval and obtuse->ignorance.

And for some reason, I thought you'd like #9 ;)

  5. ...hmm...I don't seem to remember signing myself up...lol...

but what do you think about my Death Note Holder/Shinigami idea? It would be so awesome...

Oh, dude, you could have both...instead of the ninja, you have the Death Note Holder who is on the side on innocents, and tries to kill the criminals (baddies)...and instead of the grim reaper you have the Shinigami, who is trying to kill the Death Note Holder to get his/her Death Note back...

...hmm...I don't seem to remember signing myself up...lol...

but what do you think about my Death Note Holder/Shinigami idea? It would be so awesome...

  7. Grrrr....hey, no fair posting this while I was busy trying to manipulate a lynching...

I love these, and pictograms as well...I actually was thinking of coming up some of my own, but I don't have a scanner...

  8. Are you going to join, YS?

And yes, there was some skill involved, but it's highly unlikely for all four mafiosos to last that long.

"that long" was 3 days...it only seemed long because "day 3" was actually like 4 days in real time, lol...only 2 ppl got lynched...actually, only 1, since BB escaped his...

Actually, I was thinking how the new bankroller ability reminds me of how Light used the fact that he could control his targets before they died to send messages to the police and L...

...hey, well, that would be an awesome role for Mafia VI (lol, I know, getting ahead of myself)...how about the Death Note Holder who kills someone and can control their actions, i.e. their roles for that night? Hehe...OR how about making the GR into the Shinigami and giving him that skill...

...oh, and anyone who has not seen/read Death Note...if you like mafia, you will *definitely* like Death Note!

  9. Did you notice how last game not a single mafioso out of four died?

Hey! Well, I, personally, would like to think that had at least *a little* to do with skill...:P

And, not fair, the new bankroller's ability is soooooo much better than mine was...I could of thought of soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much to do with that...hehe...

  10. Okay, listen up, this is not a normal what am I? riddle...there is a catch to it, and I'm pretty sure you can't figure out the answer without figuring out the catch, so random guessing is not going to work...:P

  11. oh my god, i haven't been on in twelve hours and I am shocked. The all-girl mafia was completely unexpected, I actually guarded a Mafia on the third night <_< and I think I speak for everyone when I say GREAT GAME :D

Hehe...yeah, you were my knight...you just didn't realize that I was No Princess ;P

Sure, I dunno what we'll wager, but I bet I don't see the 2nd night. <_< Seriously, And then I'll wager that you get lynched on day 2. :P (assuming that you make it through the 2nd night). :o

    Lol...I dunno...depends on who's playing...;P

3 more posts till 1000...where's PG? I want to hear her comments...;)

  12. Working on getting to 1000 posts for you, Nayana ;P

Oh, yeah, and thanks so much Unreality, it was great! All the twists and turns kept my mind reeling, trying to figure out what to do next (and added to my sleeplessness :P)

Well, I've already seen some of that, less reading for me! B))

I was laughing at you lying mafiosos throughout the weekend.:D

You mean mafiosas ;), and part of my strategy was trying not to lie...except for claiming to be an innocent of course...;)

Yeah, you're right about that, welcome to the club B))

Hehe, Brandon, want to make a wager on which one of us gets lynched first... :P

Great game and very unexpected ending.

Still can't believe that the mafia found my hints before the innocents did

    Well Played everyone B))

Lol...actually, it was ironic...the fact that you tried to be too inconspicuous by not saying anything when you voted for Kat was what made me suspicious of you...

  13. Slick actually made a good decision in not killing Bb- the next day, Bb was killed and his role revealed, as opposed to his role NOT being revealed if Slick had killed him. However, if slick DID kill him, there would be an open lynch slot- but you might've just lynched another Innocent, who knows :P

Yeah, I'm not saying it was a bad decision...it was just amusing at how basically Bb could have been killed/lynched/blown-up...and it was ironic that slick chose not to kill Bb, but Bb killed slick...;P

    Thanks...I think.

I guess I'll have to watch my back in the future (and figure out how to grow eyes in the back of my head to do it :P ) I guess I know who to vote for if my back's against the wall...wait, I've just mixed my metaphors, haven't I?

I really hadn't thought about doing it until I was trying to force johnson to reveal his role. In the event, that someone else was trying to find the Jihadist, I thought that outing a few mafiosos might work as a good cover.

Was the spy looking for me Unreality? You sort of hinted that he knew that something was afoot in the end post.

Watching your back isn't going to help...I have *other* ways to kill you...hehe...science pays off XP

Yeah...I thought the Jihadist was dead, based on what Unreality was saying (and saying and saying...;P) about how the innocents were screwed if they voted wrong...I thought that if the Jihadist were alive, he/she could take out one of the mafia...but you were *actually* after the warlock all along!

  14. OK . ... attempting it

    CONVErGeS lesser than ???

Will need at least 24 hours for #12, and am sure I will get it :P

    #10 last 3 letters are "nat" ?

#3: no, try to figure out a word for the math part (the second word) first, then find words that go along with it...

#10: no...actual letters are capitalized...that's part of the math ;P

  15. So when I accused esjohnson, it was playing right into the best strategy for them. If that didn't work, they could try to point the finger at me next. However, since I basically knew that johnson wasn't mafia, I knew that anyone jumping on the bandwagon with me would likely be mafia for that very reason. (I'm actually surprised at how well my gimmick worked, it killed two birds with one stone for me; it confirmed my suspicions regarding the Warlock and it went 3/3 on mafia. B)) If I had been truly working for the innocents, I think that it might have led the innocents to the win. -_- Of course, if I had been truly working for the innocents, I probably never would have thought to try it. :P )

Lol...yeah, I totally missed the warlock clue...I considered that the reason he didn't vote for BB was because he was the warlock, but since everyone else was, I figured the warlock wouldn't want to out himself...but I didn't really think about it too hard...

...actually, I thought a clever innocent might try that trick, so I didn't go after johnson until basically he had, like, "dropped five axes on his own foot" ;P...so that it wouldn't look suspicious for everyone to vote for him...lol, actually, I had my vote post all ready, but then I saw that dusty had just posted, so I postponed my post so that it didn't look like we were jumping on the train...

...I should have known something was up with you...I just didn't expect that there was a hidden baddie...well, I'll be ready next time I play...

The most amusing thing, I think, is finding out that slick had rolled a kill on Brandon and actually didn't use it...haha...I guess the odds were stacked up against BB...

But Dawh, you definitely get my vote for MVP of this game...which just happens to correspond to my first lynch vote next game...:P
