WilsonsMum, I doubt there's anything you're missing. Good news: yes, there are some words where Y is the vowel (crypt, tryst) and at least one where W is the vowel (cwm--for all you Welsh rockclimbers like Sir Edmund Hillary). Bad news: Y yielding an x and an o and C yielding an x and an o both sound like some kind of bookkeeping challenge
  2. Mysteries abound! The Excel file in my sig is supposed to be a Excel 2003 file, which my copy of Excel 2007 has no problem reading, so I'm surprised your Excel needs a "helper". My unbounded ignorance accounts for my not knowing that term, sigh. Re: Bb--my sig also contains an Excel spreadsheet for hosting a Masterword. Some folks have downloaded and used it with no problem. But BrandonB is unable to get it. I haven't yet got the whole story, but it appears that something stripped out the macro entirely. (That's why I asked about firewall). Let's continue the discussion via PM.
  3. You are too kind! I'm perplexed about not being able to open it. Questions for you: 1) you say "it" won't let you open it. Can you tell who the "it" is? Is it Windows, Excel, your firewall? 2) Please tell me, what version of Windows (Vista, XP, or something older) and what version of Excel (2003, 2007, or something older)? I uploaded this from one machine, and have downloaded it onto another, with a different version of Windows and Excel, and didn't have any problem. I'm wondering if your anti-virus software is blocking or even stripping it. (BrandonB has a problem with a different program, looks like the macro was stripped out before he got it...mysterious). As for using actual email, I may get to that point.

for a multiple letter, in the query, the target, or both, the number of xo should be the lesser of (#in query, #in target) Also, exact placement matches should be evaluated first, before o's are calculated.

  15. Yoruichi-san, Here's a template for making an enigmatic crossword. It ensures a) no addition errors in the numeric clues b) traditional crossword numbering is automatically created c) no loose two-space non-words go unnoticed. If you have any questions, please ask Sample file, with crossword entered, before running the macro that completes the job: Sigh, I can't upload a template. Oh well, upload this sample file, clear off the crossword after you've played with it, save it as a template (or as a macro-enabled template, if offered)
  16. EventHorizon, you've given us reason to believe that 4n+3 and 4n+4 cases all have solutions, and that the others all have solutions with only one hole. Can you easily count how many solutions for the first few (like 7 and 8)? And if there's less than 100, could you print them out? (If this list looks too big, could you just PM them to me? I have tried thinking about how to prove that they exist and figure out an algorithm beyond backtracking, and can't get anywhere...)

Thank you so much. Actually, I corrected an oversight in my Rev 3, so here's a new Rev 3.

TrueMaja, I'm glad you were able to see a good word through the wrong counts. (Chidoric, that's a cool word, "stanza"!). Now that you mention my spreadsheet, here is Revision 3 of the spreadsheet. Its improvement is that it makes several columns so that up to 40 queries fit in the vertical space of 10. For example, assuming "stanza" to be the target word, our queries so far would yield: string--xxo attent--xoo motion--oo banana--xoo friend--o rattan--oooo pickle--__ tackle--oo quaver--x hatbox--oo dogmas--oo joyful--__ wizens--ooo

Nobody has guessed the word--indeed TrueMaja and I think there may be some counting errors--post #1673 has the complete query list so far.
