Grayven has been to the ends of the world, and tinier than small, and has returned clutching a specimen in his well-padded glove: BOOJUM is the answer. Thanks for all your new words in my life, especially voltage with BOOMUP--we both learned something!

greasy--__ boomup--xxxxo bottle--xx bobkin--xx childs--__ boomer--xxxo stable--o bonbon--xxo bouncy--xxo botany--xx borsht--xx bonduc--xxx booked--xxx WM wasn't as fortunate as Voltage in creating a word. I realize I've brought this on myself with my choice of word, but I can't find "boopun", so I'm going to be (inconsistently) picky and skip it.

greasy--__ boomup--xxxxo bottle--xx bobkin--xx childs--__ stable--o bonbon--xxo bouncy--xxo botany--xx borsht--xx bonduc--xxx booked--xxx More interestingness! I have used a BODKIN. However, a bunch of Irish and a bunny are named Bobkin, so I guess I'll let this pass, so that you can get at 2 Bs.

  18. Dear Booknerd, my heart is with you (you may actually find my similar question earlier in the thread). I hope this is a useful answer--every square of the crossword is to be filled with the symbol of an element (H = hydrogen, Cs = cesium, etc.). The letters spell out words, whose clues are given in the word clues. however, if you use the Atomic Number for each of these elements instead of the letters, you can add up the Atomic Numbers to get the numeric values in the number clues. Does that help, or were you already there?

WM: oooh, aaah! we've been sitting on it all this time... Grayven: Good choice, and very educational. I was careful to check for the possibility of multiple Os, but neglected multiple Cs, as you thought we might! (By the way, "googol" has been a word since 1938, and was known to kids reading puzzle books in the 50's (I know, I was one))

Yeah, after I posted, I saw that if it doesn't have a C, it has a J--leaves googly out. And I only tossed in googol to check on the possibility of 3 o's--it's the only word that came to mind with 3 of 'em.
