IE. Thus the thought that the final answer might be a VALEDICTION which sounded somewhat familiar/tonally sensible re Sherlock Holmes. Not being enigmatic about being enigmatic at all. A very literary hint. The allusion should be easily recognizable, although technically not exactly correct. The choice of who the line is directed towards is referring to the type of puzzles said puzzle maker was posting at the time, an example Hope that will get the ball rolling .
