What is black when you get it, red when you use it, and white when you're all through with it?

Challenge: do other reasonable answers exist?

A black cow. Get the cow, use it for meat, end up with a skeleton.

Here's an alternate answer.

An ink ribbon. Black when you get get it. It is "read" when you use it. White when there is no ink left. Although I don't know if a used ink ribbon would be white at the end, but it is a possibility.
