CLOSED

If 3 then D is last as the only change from CLOSET to CLOSED wad T->D and the score raised one.

If the above is not true, try:

CLOSES

if 3 then S is last as the only change from CLOSET->CLOSES was T->S and the score raised one.

If that is indeed true, disregard the rest of my post.

However, if CLOSES is still 2, try:

CLOVES

S is already disproven, as the score didn't change from CLOSET even though the S was a different letter. So the only (other) change was S->V and if 3, then V is third as the only change from CLOSES to CLOVES was S->V and the score raised.

If 1 then S is third as the only change from CLOSES to CLOVES was S->V and the score dropped one.

If the above is true, disregard anything else I say.

If still 2, try

GLOVES

If 3 then G is first as the only change from CLOVES to GLOVES was C->G but the score added one.

If 1 then C is first as the only change from CLOVES to GLOVES was C->G but the score dropped one,

If still two, try;

GROVES

If 3, then R is second as the only change from GLOVES to GROVES was L->R and the score added one.

If 1, then L is second as the only change from GLOVES to GROVES was L->R and the score dropped one.

If GROVES is still two, then O is third and E is fifth as all other letters that could score are disproven, and these are the only two letters left to score.

REVOKE

If 1, then T is second to last as the only change from REVOTE to REVOKE was T->K and the score dropped one.

If 3, then E is second, last, and K is second to last, as

DELETE

REVOTE

The only same letters are E, T, and E.

So if T is changed and the score is up one,

a. the E's must score, as they are the only ones that could have scored.

b. If 3, K is second to last as the only change from REVOTE was T->K but the score added one.

If 2, then the E's score as since the only change from REVOTE to REVOKE was T->K, and the score staeyed the same, meaning the E's are the only ones that could have scored.

EXCITE

If 1, then it would be ?E???? because

DELETE - 2

REVOTE - 2 so there are the 2 Es and the T

Since the fisrt E is out of the equation. So then the score would go down to 1. We aren't sure what the other letter is but with this evidence we are sure of the first E.

If 2, then the score would be ????TE because the first E is out of the equation and the score is the same.

??????

DELETE - 2

REVOTE - 2

REVOKE - 2

EXCITE - 1

INVITE - 1

Aaryan, I like the first proofs but the one pertinent to REVOKE=2 doesn't seem to work.

DElete=2 and rEVote=rEVoke=2 such that DEV???=3 indicates that letters other than those E's can score.

TheCube, your logic from EXCITE=1 suffers from the same problem I described above.
