Guest
First letter has to be P because: we have nurs*=1 (the other 1 was for ????E), jui**=1 (C can't be fourth from farce, and the other point is for the final e), and pie**=1 (same reasoning as jui**). if P is not first then either n or j is first. Let's say n is first, then in PIE** we are left with *IE**. and in jui** we are left with **i** (since u can't be it or we would have had 3 in nurse). and if juice gives us **i** then piece gives us *I***. This would leave us with NII and there is no word in the english language that starts with NII. let's say j is first, then in PIE** we are left with *ie**. and in NURS* we are left with **RS* since u can't be it or we would have had 3 in juice. so we are left with either JIR?E, JI?SE, or J?ESE. Again this doesn't match any english words (at least in my dictionary). So the only conclusion to draw is that P is first.

You've used linguistic logic (highlighted in red above) which, according to UR, is not allowed.

Molly Mae
PUREE - ? @Joe: Right, but you still haven't proved it. PURSE - ? If PURSE - 3, P is first as it would be the only letter change from NURSE - 2. Edited June 22, 2011 by Molly Mae

Molly Mae
QUEUE But I'll prove ?UE?E anyway. PURSE - 2 and PURGE - 2: Letter change from S -> G without score change means that both letters are incorrect. PURSE - 2 and NURSE - 2: Letter change from P -> N without score change means that both letters are incorrect. FARCE - 1, where ????E is known means that ??R?? is incorrect. PURGE - 2, where P?RG? is incorrect means that ?U??E is proved. PIECE - 2, where ?U??E is already proved. P is disproved (PURSE -> NURSE above). ???C? is impossible as FARCE = 1, where ????E is already proved. Hence, ?UE?E Edited June 23, 2011 by Molly Mae
