But if the couplet approach is wrong, then I'll throw out my initial answer even though I couldn't get it to work with all the clues. Bugle calls? I know there are distinct calls for mess (Dinner is served), atttention, retreat (end of the day), reveille (morning roll call), to arms (the war is surely now), tattoo (silence), taps (such distress..) and I'm pretty sure that fox hunts have their own bugle calls (be ready for the hunt).
