I think the OP is looking for just 2 letters that when added will result in a 1000, like x+y=1000.
  2. k-man

    since when 100*100=1000?
  3. By "worst possible", in the context of this puzzle, I meant the distribution of points that maximizes the distance between any two points, which is the same as your definiton. Maybe I didn't describe the distribution very well, but that's why I attached the image. I'm not sure I follow you here completely, but some things that work in 2 dimensions don't work once you apply them to a 3-dimensional problem. I agree that I haven't provided a formal proof of my solution, but that's all I got for now.

    How about 1 */* 0, 10 */* 0 and 1 */* 1?
  5. Very simple. What is the percentage of even numbers in the set of all natural numbers? The answer is 50%. Even though both sets are infinite, since one set is a subset of another set it can be expressed as a percentage of the total set. In some cases it can be calculated precisely, but in some (like this problem) it can only be approximated.

I see at least 3 numbers unsatisfied in this solution. I didn't exhastively check all numbers.

Does this problem have a solution? It's been a while since it was posted and no one offered any reasonable solutions yet. This forum is full of people with IQ in the 99th percentile, yet the problem is still unsolved. Are there any hints that can help solve it? Does the OP have the answer and the explanation?

    EDIT: misspelling

I stand corrected. No, mine is definitely wrong. I haven't done any advanced calculus in a long time, so I tried to retrace my own steps and couldn't repeat it. Found a mistake. However, I couldn't get your answer either. Care to post how did you get your answer?

Ignore the previous post. I messed up.
