You guys dont have it yet. Getting closer I feel. Working off the concept of old I think is helpful. HM, no movie reference here,. DD and DN, yours are very well conceived and match perfectly for the first half of the riddle but fall off a little toward the end. EDM, you had a great line of thought yesterday which was closer than these two.

Am almost afraid to say but please dont be very upset. Probably not any consolation but you slipped on an intentional misdirection. So not a perfect ten. am guessing the word splitting? and maybe metaphorically the pedestal young gymnasts are put on?

no, sorry. "not intended to stab" mostly just rhymes with jab but it's meaning is meant to be literal here (and not really consequential as few things are meant to stab).

Hello there ajham. Welcome to the Den. Thanks so much for using the spoiler. Impressive for a first poster as is what you've guessed. Your answer(s) are not what I meant for this line (or the riddle as a whole) but I really like how you're thinking. There are other instances within this riddle that do have meaning not necessarily as would be usual and also best discerned if read literally.
