Sorry for leaving you to fend for yourself...been tied up... Umm...are you sure about the "must not"? In the context, since the 12345678 can't be killed if the protector is alive, then I think the sentence should say what the protector needs to do to prevent the 12345678 from dying or something like that...

good title if I'm in the zone Not really, sorry...but I think the metaphor fits because it's something that waits for no one... ;P Since people seem to be struggling, here's some advice: I crafted this riddle *very* carefully, so taking an "impressionistic" approach won't help...don't try to pick out particular words as keywords or anything (which I think is sending ppl on the wrong track...). Instead, look carefully at the meanings of each phrase. I promise the answers fit really well.

You're right, your thinking on #1 is the wrong way around...that should give you a hint...;P Also, since firebirdaz didn't really explain how he got his answer, let me add this: My goal was to make you look at the whole picture to figure out who the "you" is, then go back and look at each rhyme carefully...

Yay, you got the spurner right (if no one was close I was gonna suggest focusing on that part first, by looking at the "big picture" and hinting at the clues in the chorus...), but none of the spurned so far (although you may be close on some ;P)...keep trying! Now that you know who the spurner is, it should be easier to go back and figure out what fits for each spurned lover.

Okay...should be sleeping...but just realized: The XXXXX Protector: as long as this person is still alive, the ~~~~~~~~ cannot be killed. If the ~~~~~~~~ is attacked at night, then the Protector must not ~~~~~~~~~~ him/her. If the ~~~~~~~~ is lynched, then if that person is killed the Mayor can prevent the Protector's lynching instead. The Criminal: This is the player that the Drug Addict and the Serial Killer are trying to find. He/she is aware that they are trying to ~~ ~~~~~. So there is only one 8 letter name, probably the name of the other secret role... Okay, now BED...for real! (Shut up, my stupid brain ;P)

So I was thinking that since [blue 8 letter] "cannot be killed' as long as "the Protector" is alive, then if [blue 8 letter] is lynched, then the Mayor could prevent "the Protector"'s lynching instead to save both...I dunno.

Those are 8 letters, and I don't think mafiosos can't be killed...maybe "leaders". The 7 letter characters are burglar, dentist, and psychic... But I think maybe this has something to do w/ the "special event" that allows the cult leaders discover each other, which would tie up all the vague references in the description...
