I have never worked with base 3 before but this is what I am getting.
2 1 0 1 0(base 3)
- 1 1 2 2(base 3)
-----------------
1 2 1 1 1
Since the last digit of the top number is 0, you borrow from the 1 like in regular subtraction. However, the 0 becomes a 3, not a 10, so 3-2=1. You do the same for the other digits. As I said, I have never done this before so this is my theory. I have no idea how a 3-0 would work but fortunately, that isn't necessary for this one. I checked with a base calculator and it seems to work. Good luck!

I was assuming he would eventually force the door open. Then you hit him over the head. I hope this idea of hitting people over the head doesn't get to me in the real world.
-
Well, since dying doesn't seem to have much of a consequence here, I guess it doesn't hurt to try. =.='
-
Use the TV to block the door. Then hit him over the head when he comes in. Maybe he'll run out of bullets by shooting the TV? Should I be trying something other than hitting him over the head?
-
Hold the door shut. When he finally gets frustrated enough to charge, hit him over the head.

1. Offer Greg some wine and hope he gets drunk.
2. Try to launch the wine into his gun to get the powder wet so it can't be fired. Not sure if it works that way.
3. Offer Greg some wine and hit him over the head with the bottle.
4. Attempt to shock him by arranging certain electronics on the floor along with the wine in front of the door.
I'm in favor of just hitting him over the head with the bottle.

OK. Does that mean I make up the next rule? If so, I've got it.

Point taken. Either way, 56 is not anywhere near the greatest value. So as curr3nt has put it, the highest value is greater than or equal to 40321.
@curr3nt: Any idea how to prove what the greatest value is?
-
You can get at least 60480 by adding 1 and 2 and multiplying the rest. I don't know if that is the maximum.

I made a table of squares. Starting from the bottom (44^2), I subtracted and looked for two squares that would fit the remainder. 44^2=1936. 1989-1936=53. 53=49+4. 44, 7, 2. I found that going down by twos worked. 42^2, 40^2, 38^2, etc. 42^2=1764. 1989-1764=225. Find two sqares that equal 225.

What is the exact text of the problem?

Maybe I'm missing something but doesn't that give you 1989=1989?

Oops. I forgot to type base 3 after the answer. 12111 (base 3) . Now that I think about it, there wouldn't be a need for 3-0. I don't know if this will mean anything to you but think about this. In base 10, we have 10 digits (0-9). After 9, we go to 10. In base 3, we have 3 digits (0-2). After 2, we don't go to 3, we go to 10 because two is the highest digit in base 3. Here is what I did.
