Question

This riddle contains four

The first two are nearly the same for which you most likely have the first

and because of this you must have the second.

The last two are paradoxical opposites for if you have the third

you have and don't have need of the fourth.

If you have the third, well then you certainly have the first two.

If you have the fourth you want the first, or at least the second.

What are we?

I thought about this through all of Rubber Soul and half of Sgt. Pepper, and got nothing.

Then I started going through people's guesses... EDM mentioned "school," and then I thought:

paper with writing on it

blank paper

pencil

eraser

nothing yet, to clarify the parodox

the third could be considered the opposite of the fourth. The third also has a need and simultaneously doesn't have a need for the fourth.

i hope this isn't misleading :/

Pencils are opposite of erasers, and if you have a pencil you simultaneously have and don't need an eraser!

or maybe units of money, like quarters and other coins?

It's the opposite thing that kills... how many opposites encompass its partner like this? An opposite that both contains its partner and renders it useless?

"The last two are paradoxical opposites for if you have the third

you have and don't have need of the fourth."

Are the two lines I've focused on most (because without them, there'd be plenty of answers to the riddle), and I've thought up next to nothing...

What are we?

(1)Paid vacation time

(2)vacation time

(3)vacation

(4)a place to go

If you have VAC time @ work, it's most likely paid. If you have paid VAC time, then you definitely have the VAC time anyway.

If you have a vacation, you have a place to go already, and no longer need a place to go.

If you have a place to go, you want paid leave/VAC time, or at least VAC time/time off.

My bad, i left out the word "need" in my clarification.

"The last two are parodoxical opposites for if you have the third you have need and don't have need of the fourth."
