I just read your re-write (which I like much better than the original! ^_^) and I have a tiny question:

Third line: "Gray than black"...you used the comparative term "than" so does that mean it should read Grayer than black? Or did you mean to use "then", to indicate a chronological progression?

Thanks for the clarification... good riddle!

You're right. Gray then black. My original rewrite has 'then' so I'm not sure how I screwed it up when I posted. =P

The Moon? Waxing, Waning, & Full Moon, with all the different gibbous phases between.... ?

And not correct. Sorry.

Has anyone guessed sunset? Twilight/Dusk... 3 names, from grey to black... wise men fear the night for it may hold/hide... ?

It's funny that you say that. I've heard that a moonless night is one of three things a wise man should fear. But no. Not my intention.

Here's a quick edit/rewrite, mostly of the second verse. I'm looking at writing a fourth verse, as well.

Group of three

With watch near,

Gray then black

Wise man's fear.

An easy mark

We slowly slay,

Steadfastly bound

By toxic pain.

Our name we share

With another three,

But a hundred-some more

Attempt mimicry.

Group of three > malignant cells, tumors and growth

With watch near> time is of the essence

Gray then black> deterioration

Wise man's fear.>yes

An easy mark> a cell

We slowly slay,>metastasize

Steadfastly bound>often irreversible

By toxic pain.>yes

Our name we share>cancer

With another three,>4th astrological sign, tropic of...and blight

But a hundred-some more>at least

Attempt mimicry.>multiply

anyway

This is why I really love explanations.

As you've stated, it's not the answer I have intended.

There's that fine line that must be walked--too much information will require little thought. Too little information will be too ambiguous.

Of course, I'm sure everyone faces that problem when writing riddles.

All right, now. I've added verse four below. I've left it in a spoiler because that's pretty much what it is.

Group of three

With watch near,

Gray then black

Wise man's fear.

An easy mark

We slowly slay,

Steadfastly bound

By toxic pain.

Our name we share

With another three,

But a hundred-some more

Attempt mimicry.

When all of us three

Align on the floor

Our limbs will total

Four more than a score.
