plainglazed
Some time ago ...In every home ......You could find me there The host of secrets ...I keep to myself ......Defying not thin air Protecting some ...For a time ......Sporadic perhaps my care No longer needed ...Out with a twist ......But no reason to despair For hardly no more ...Do you see me ......In fact I am quite rare And now you know ...Not how I look ......But how I do compare
0 plainglazed
Well more great answers but not the one I am hoping for. The blame definitely goes to the original riddle. Have been struggling with a rewrite that hopefully gives better info while still adequately hiding the answer. Some time ago ...I could be seen ......In kitchens everywhere The host of gifts ...That I may keep ......Yet little time to spare Protecting some ...Those little beasts ......Sporadic perhaps my care Made obsolete ...Out with a twist ......No reason to despair So hardly now ...Will it be found ......In fact I am quite rare More common today ...Not how I look ......But how I do compare My apologies. Thanks to all for sticking with this one.

0 plainglazed
Yes indeed! Thanks for solving this one. Hopefully the fact that you thought of the answer before both confirms the need for the rewrite and means it did not make it too too easy. Certainly not to take anything away from the fabulously clever t_l. Here's some of my muddled thinking: Some time ago In every home You could find me there - a breadbox used to be more common The host of secrets - the Host of Secrets meant as bread which I suspect vee's brain was onto with the religious guesses I keep to myself - it stores and hopefully helps keep Defying not thin air - cant keep fresh for long Protecting some For a time - not the perfect solution from vermin and bugs Sporadic perhaps my care - and maybe mold No longer needed Out with a twist - replaced essentially by the plastic bag and/or maybe that little twist tie But no reason to despair For hardly no more Do you see me - maybe double meaning with not finding hard bread In fact I am quite rare - as well as the obvious no longer common meaning And now you know Not how I look - would guess most here with a computer would live in a more modern high-tech home and have never seen a breadbox But how I do compare - and would more likely have heard of a breadbox from the saying "is it bigger than a breadbox?" again, my apologies to the international crowd who may not be familiar with this American idiom coined by Steve Allen on the TV gameshow "What's my Line" Thanks to all who played along. Had a blast as always. Be back soon.
