Question

Okay, it's been almost four months since I've done one of these and have been out of WAI inspiration for over a week now so am reverting back to my old ways. Have to spend a fair amount of the day away from my machine so can check in only on occasion. Part of the beauty of these is there hopefully is only one real single answer per line so y'all play amongst yourselves. Feel free to share your work while I'm out of the Den.

1) Your mother and Mr Shaw lodge between onlookers. (7)

2) Lost and confused but half fare well with me. (3,3)

3) Small business; small, small circle. (5)

4) Is naught that is having a wing, and is Mom and the hospital depot hosting alright? (11)

5) In the mirror regarding six short ways you and I exist to look doubly brief. (11)

6) A side split over reversed options. (3,3)

7) B. (7)

8) A pair play host to returning "All of Me" in a late night broadcast, see? (3,7)

9) Certain Auntie before someones having half a laugh kid. (9)

10) A written exam reflects, simply speaking, the dorms leader on average. (7)

For those new to these Play on Word "Quickies" - Each word or two (generally speaking) of the puzzle corresponds to a letter or two (generally speaking) "spelling" out the answer. Other descriptors can be thrown in refering to the relation of individual letters. The letters will "read" left to right as presented unless there is a descriptor that directs otherwise. For the most part, punctuation is not part of the answer but rather to make the clue read better. Other than that, the clues are hopefully very precise. There should be no unnecessary words in the clues or extra letters in the answers. It's best to read these very literally and/or phonetically. The numbers in parenthesis indicate the number of letters in the answer. All answers share a common theme which, when apparant, is the best singular clue, often enabling a guess at an answer and working backwards to "prove" the guess correct.

Good thought but not what I had in mind for 7). This one uses kinda reverse logic to the rest of them but couldn't resist throwing it in.

chuckling....???

i don't think it's correct, but worth a shot, right? :D

Not it EDM but thanks for the guess.

Not that either, sorry.

Thanks, you two, for kicking this one off.

Some here have a distinct advantage of seeing these types before. Here is a link to the to the last "Quickie PoWs" I did. This may give some more insight as to the structure of these if you care to take a peek.

10) Written exam relfects: I'm guessing SA (essay) and possibly backwards, so AS?

Simply Speaking: still thinking

Dorm leaders on average: RA??? average = C???

Just quick thoughts

Duuuuude...all's exactly right except the "reflects" bit.

EDIT: Not unusual but thought (and still do) that this one might be the hardest to get and the least recognizable component of the theme. Will be curious to see how this proceeds.

Host = MC

Late night = PM

see? = C

These are definitely tough, PG. But I do enjoy the challenge.

Just going to throw out first thoughts. I don't know if Sarcasm is right for number 10 but before I saw that I was thinking it was Caracas and that we were dealing with capitals but I don't think so anymore.

It also started looking like palindromes but, again, just first thoughts.

SARCASM??

not that, sorry

Just guessing. Build off of me please.

Regarding = RE

You = U

I = I

OR You and I = WE

Exist = B

To look = eye = I

Used the old MrsP bolded trick in your answer above to indicate correct. The others, though definitely how I might use them, represent other letters this time.

Host = MC

Late night = PM

see? = C

Thanks for your perseverance. Not it on either of the theme guesses and am not sure if 10) will be easily recognizable even after solved. Like I added in an edit above, I think it's the trickiest. For 8) your "(play) host (to)" is correct.

3) Small business; small, small circle. (5)

.......... (???) .......... (dot...???)

--- + dot ..???

not that EDM, please keep at it.

A side split -- C --> See

over reversed options. --- Saw (3,3)

See where you're coming from dD, but not that. Think we'll have to establish the theme first for this one. Sorry, but really don't think they're all as out there as this one. I felt I had to make it a little tougher because the (3,3) is such a big clue especially after the theme is known.

Somehow the 5 minutes I intend to spend on your "quickies" always turns into 2.5 hours of racking my brain for possible meanings & permutations of letter-intentions!!! :P:blink: My revenge, at least, is then you have to sort through all the crap I come up with! Muah ha ha! ;):lol::ph34r:

Nothing finished, merely possibilities & a little building off of others.

1) Your mother and Mr Shaw lodge between onlookers.

Your = UR

Mother = MA

& Mr Shaw - as in George Bernard?

Lodge Between - directional?

On-Lookers - eyes -> II?

2) Lost and confused but half fare well with me.

Lost & Confused - directional? (maybe lose a letter? maybe an anagram?)

But - butt/end?

Half Fare = FA or RE

Well

With Me - I?

3) Small business; small, small circle.

Small Business = CO

Small, small = wee -> WE

Circle = O

4) Is naught that is having a wing, and is Mom and the hospital depot hosting alright?

Is = B or R

Naught = 0 -> O

Having -> Halving? (1/2) Wing = WI or NG

Is = B or R

Mom = MA

Hospital Depot = ER

Hosting

Alright = OK

5) In the mirror regarding six short ways you and I exist to look doubly brief.

Mirror - directional?

Regarding = RE

Six - VI or F or C(Carbon)

Short = wee -> WE

You & I = WE

Exist - B or R

To Look = see -> C

Doubly = double E = EE, Brief -> E

6) A side split over reversed options.

A side - Left or Right -> L or R/RT, A or B

Options - alternatives -> ALT?

7) B.

... Yeah, got nothing besides the usual is/are

8) A pair play host to returning "All of Me" in a late night broadcast, see?

Pair = two -> TO

Host = MC

Returning - directional?

All of Me - whole? -> O

In = N

A Late Night Broadcast - Jay Leno? -> J

See = C

9) Certain Auntie before someones having half a laugh kid.

Certain - positive? -> + -> T

Auntie

Before - directional?

Someones - Yous -> UU or W

Having Half - like halving half, meaning a quarter, one fourth? -> Fourth = IV, D, or Be(berrylium)

or, half of half of a laugh - HAHA -> HA -> H or A

10) A written exam reflects, simply speaking, the dorms leader on average.

Written exam = SA, Reflects -> AS

Simply Speaking - Say? -> SA

Dorms Leader = RA

Average = C

Hey t_l, great stuff below. I've highlighted and commented in the spoilers. The "quickie" refers to the five (ok, fifteen) minutes it took to write these ^_^ . But you were correct in that it took longer to sort thru your response. But truthfully, that's the fun. Think this one's about to be blown open as soon as the theme is guessed. 1. and 3. are so very close and what you have solved on 8. along with the word break down make me think that one is close, as well. Please keep at it.

1) Your mother and Mr Shaw lodge between onlookers.

Your = UR

Mother = MA - yes

& Mr Shaw - as in George Bernard? - wrong Mr Shaw

Lodge Between - directional? - half and half

On-Lookers - eyes -> II? - yes, nicely done!

2) Lost and confused but half fare well with me.

Lost & Confused - directional? (maybe lose a letter? maybe an anagram?) - half and half

But - butt/end? - highlighted is correct butt not any real use, oops and sorry

Half Fare = FA or RE

Well

With Me - I? - yes

3) Small business; small, small circle.

Small Business = CO - yes!

Small, small = wee -> WE - nope

Circle = O

4) Is naught that is having a wing, and is Mom and the hospital depot hosting alright?

Is = B or R - yes

Naught = 0 -> O - yes

Having -> Halving? (1/2) Wing = WI or NG - not it but good reasoning

Is = B or R

Mom = MA - yes

Hospital Depot = ER - yes

Hosting

Alright = OK - almost

5) In the mirror regarding six short ways you and I exist to look doubly brief.

Mirror - directional? - yes

Regarding = RE - yes

Six - VI or F or C(Carbon) - right on

Short = wee -> WE - no

You & I = WE - yep

Exist - B or R - yep

To Look = see -> C - got it

Doubly = double E = EE, Brief -> E - not it but well thought out again

6) A side split over reversed options.

A side - Left or Right -> L or R/RT, A or B

Options - alternatives -> ALT? - we're gonna need the theme for this one, I think it's too obscure otherwise

7) B.

... Yeah, got nothing besides the usual is/are - not as usual

8) A pair play host to returning "All of Me" in a late night broadcast, see?

Pair = two -> TO - nice one

Host = MC

Returning - directional? - yes

All of Me - whole? -> O

In = N - not this time

A Late Night Broadcast - Jay Leno? -> J - different one

See = C - yes

9) Certain Auntie before someones having half a laugh kid.

Certain - positive? -> + -> T - perfectly sensical but not it this time

Auntie

Before - directional? - yes, and another that really "takes you nowhere" as you naturally read left to right, oops and sorry again

Someones - Yous -> UU or W - I like it but not what I had in mind/doesnt work here

Having Half - like halving half, meaning a quarter, one fourth? -> Fourth = IV, D, or Be (berrylium)- cool, but no

or, half of half of a laugh - HAHA -> HA -> H or A - that's it

10) A written exam reflects, simply speaking, the dorms leader on average.

Written exam = SA, Reflects -> AS - nope

Simply Speaking - Say? -> SA - no

Dorms Leader = RA

Average = C

:offtopic: @ t_l: Quick question, another meaning for "chess" that's not the game?

Small business -- CO

small, small -- small abbreviated -- SM

circle -- O

COSMO??

Exactly right, well done.

A written exam -- essay -- SA

reflects, simply speaking, -- EZ reflected -- ZE

the dorms leader -- RA

on average -- C

Sazerac

And this one, too. (the one I thought would be the hardest, by the way, once again supporting the BrainDen riddle paradox) Do think you're onto something! Cheers.

If this is about booze, shouldn't take long.

That is if dD if correct.

Both of dD's above are correct if that is the proof you were looking for. B))
