## Question

Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for \$1.58. The counter girl took my \$2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there , holding the nickel and 3 pennies , while looking at the screen on her register.

I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters , but she hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to her , she stood there and cried. Why do I tell you this? Because I wanted to point out the evolution in teaching math since the 1950s:

Q. A logger sells a truckload of lumber for \$100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit ?

Q. A logger sells a truckload of lumber for \$100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or \$80. What is his profit?

Q. A logger sells a truckload of lumber for \$100. His cost of production is \$80. Did he make a profit?

Q. A logger sells a truckload of lumber for \$100. His cost of production is \$80 and his profit is \$20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

Q. A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of \$20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers, and if you feel like crying , it's ok.)

Q. Un hachero vende una carretada de maderapara \$100. El costo de la producciones es \$80. Cuanto dinero ha hecho?

I always wondered why I couldn't understand the language they were speaking.

acually, us math is WAY harder...then again, a math class review times tables last week, and we're in 8th!

I think this is referring to elementary school math class, so of course middle school math is harder.

And I can tell I'm a left-brainer, as soon as I opened the first spoiler I easily calculated the profit.

no, i think you have it easy compared to kids where i am.......*shudder*

then again.....maths is always complex.....that's why they give us so many problems....

yah...that was the easy class...we're doing quadratics right now...

Did you know you could use matrix multiplication to solve a quadratic system?

That's what we're doing right now in Pre-Cal/Trig.

no?

That was more of a rhetorical question; you probably won't cover matrices until Algebra 3-4 (or Algebra II, whatever you call it).

maths is always complex.....

Only if you attempt to find the square root of a negative number...

LOL

but seriously, be rational; go get some pi.

Yah, I'm on Algebra 1 right now, next year is geomatry (<-- is that how you spell that, having a blonde moment here)...at least i think. it usually is in public schools but im *dun dun dun* switching sides...

yah so after geomatry is algebra 2... stupid order in my opinion...

Hmm, I am sure there was, I must have been imagining it

Edit: Spelling
