I found a solution that requires only 7 pieces, but it requires flipping of 2 of the pieces to the other side. Since the OP didn't prohibit that I'm posting my solution.

Not sure if I'm understanding the puzzle correctly, but the way I see it is there is a point inside the square with given distances to three corners of the square. Find the area of the square.
