  1. I may be a fool for posting seeing as how the original poster seems to be MIA, but...

...that it's a letter or number. Mostly because of the clues that it's something everyone knows and has used our entire lives.

Eight is lucky in China, and if it "tips over," you'll never hear the end of it because it's the sign for infinity.

You've seen it recently (we see numbers everywhere), but it hasn't been in the last few years (not since 2008). But I don't see how it's deep in ice.

Here's a collection of clues amassed so far...

Put me in front of an infant

Who's just learned how to walk

And they may have trouble getting by

You can find me deep within ice

But you've surely seen me recently

Despite my noticeable lack the past few years

    I'm considered lucky

    But if I tip over

You may never hear the end of it

    What am I?

    clues given:

    > the first stanza is very figurative so don't dwell on seemingly obvious things

    > everyone knows it and has known it nearly their entire lives

    > something everyone knows and has used countless times

    > answer "completely different" from previous answers: water, fish, mirror, milk, salt, oil, earth

    > lucky to some particular very large culture

    > it's round

sorry I wasn't around for so long. yes that is correct. nice reasoning

On its side, at least, the 'ce' of 'ice' resembles 8.

And asking an infant to walk in a 'figure eight' when s/he's just learned,

    May well give him trouble.

    Good one!

    thanks =)

hadn't thought of the 'ce'. the 'tip over' line was meant to be the symbol for infinity. intention of the ice line was a figure 8. deep usually means 'really' deep, but it can also mean a cm or so deep carving from an ice skate

also the first stanza can be the figure 8 bonanova pointed out or the actual age of the infant. say its 2 or 3, then they may have trouble getting by when they are 82 or 83

  2. I don't know why, but I want to say

    salt

I don't have a logical reason, just a gut feeling.

it's certainly a good answer and it follows the clues I've left well, but it doesn't fit all the lines. the answer is something completely different than anything guessed so far.

I think this one has gone on long enough so here are 2 big hints. I have 1 more hint to reveal if needed, but it will surely end things.

start solving by thinking about lucky things. and perhaps not universally lucky, but lucky to only particular cultures that may not be yours. the cultures that do find it lucky are very large.

    it's round ;)

  3. can we have a clue please? its dri xvin me mad :-\

sorry. there's not too much I can say without completely giving it away. as I said before it's not an easy solve, but the answer itself is extremely simple. it's something everyone knows and has used countless times ;)
  4. water???

    :)

    perhaps...fish? :P

no but thanks for trying =) I kinda thought it would just die off...

the first stanza is very figurative so don't dwell on seemingly obvious things.

the answer is very very very simple actually. everyone knows it and has known it nearly their entire lives ;)

  5. Put me in front of an infant

Who's just learned how to walk

And they may have trouble getting by

You can find me deep within ice

But you've surely seen me recently

Despite my noticeable lack the past few years

    I'm considered lucky

    But if I tip over

You may never hear the end of it

    What am I?

  6. Was she a tight-rope walker, or some other occupation where the new shoes caused her demise?

    close

A lot of these are pretty open-ended.

    1. Heart attack.

    2. The non-smoking car exploded or derailed.

    3. Heart attack.

    4. Heart attack.

    5. Could be anything, but I've heard this as the murderer is a conjoined twin.

    Edit: 69th post lololol :D:D!!!!1111one111eleventyone

    #5 is correct

I think I've got the first, and I've heard the fifth before.

    The first:

The rays were fish. The room was on the Titanic; I just wrote a Titanic riddle, so this came easy.

yes. doesn't have to be that specific but yes anyway ;)

Does it have anything to do with the fact that non smoking compartments are mostly air conditioned?

    nope

#4 is the old classic one with the ice cubes.

As for #2, I'm guessing that an assassin was trying to kill him with a sniper rifle. The smoke in the train car allowed him to see the laser sight and successfully hide.

you're onto #4 it seems but I cant give you credit unless you post the answer. awesome answer for #2 I'll give you extra credit =)

Since we haven't recieved definate answers, i'll throw out my guess on each of them.

    # 1:

I think the Titanic answer is correct. Ballroom in a sunken ship. He died while exploring the wreckage because he ran out of air.lol

    # 2:

The man was blind but recently had a operation to restore his sight. He is overjoyed at being able to see. Were he in a non-smoking car when the train went through a long tunnel, he would think he had gone blind again and killed himself in missery. However, in the smoking car, the light from the peoples cigarettes let him know he can still see. I think thats why it specified a train ride home, not a car full of smokers. lol

    # 3:

I have heard a version of this before. one of the previous answers was close and made me remember it. The women is an assistant to a knife thrower. The new shoes have a higher heel on them causing her to be hit by one of the knifes.

    # 4:

This one i think was correctly answered already. There is poison in the ice cubes. One man drinks his quickly and lives, the other drinks his slowly, the ice melts poisoning the drink, and he dies.

    # 5:

J.Green acually helped me solve this one because i thought about his answer and it clicked. They are Siemese twins, thus completely identicle. They cannon punish the murderer because they will never be able to prove which of the two sisters actually did it. (all forensic evidence would be identical for them both).

yes to all 5 =) good job guys

    1) WitchOfDoubt

    2) Jake Coburn, extracredit: SeaCalMaster

    3) Jake Coburn

    4) Jake Coburn

    5) j.green

just to clarify the answer to #5:

you can't separate them. not because you can't prove it. the judge won't punish the innocent woman for what the guilty one did.

  7. some of these are old but I didn't find them in the search

    1) A man lies dead in a large room. There is a chandelier attached to the ceiling and fancy artwork, sculptures and jewels all around. Near him there is a large window letting rays in, yet he was clearly not a vampire. What happened?

    2) A man is returning home by train. If he was sitting in the non-smoking car he would have died. why?

    3) A woman bought a new pair of shoes, went to work and died. why?

    4) Two men enter a bar and order identical drinks. one lives, the other dies. neither had allergies or choked. what happened?

    5) A woman has incontrovertible proof in court that her husband was murdered by another woman. The judge sat in wonderment and said: "I agree with the evidence, but this woman can't be punished" why did he rule that way?

  8. I agree with pretty much everything been said so far, especially itachi's recommendations, though I'd like to add...

A SCANNER DARKLY (some of the most intelligent/witty dialogue i've ever seen... and VERY cool animation style... and a killer story based on an awesome book by Philip K Dick)

    SPIRITED AWAY (complex and interesting)

MOON (very psychological...smart and all twisty-like)

THE DEPARTED (my favorite crime drama...so good...)

I love all 4 of those =) in the vein of 'a scanner darkly', 'waking life' has a similar animation style and actually preceded it. it's very psychological and quite interesting as well. also, a very under known scorsese film is 'kundun' about the dalai lama. it's really excellent
  9. Yeah, Memento is good. Itachi, Agree on the tense dialogue flicks. Love 12 angry men, and what a stellar cast. I'm surprised nobody mentioned any Hitchcock . . . Rear Window rocks!

heh after I posted that I thought about him. and I also forgot to mention Kubrick, my favorite director of all time... such astounding films as 'a clockwork orange' 'Dr. Strangelove' 'the Shining' 'Eyes Wide Shut' and '2001' all arguably the best of their respective genres

another director I find fascinating is takashi miike. I recommend 'audition' the most. it's not for the faint of heart though and it really sneaks up on you =) his work is so broad ranging from psychotic and sadistic yakuza flicks to westerns and family films. very interesting body of work

  10. You want to talk about my real meaning, though? Take a house cat. You don't own a house cat. A house cat owns you. Seriously. You take care of it, feed it, clean its litter box. You pet it, play with it. If the cat wants to cuddle, she'll cuddle. If the cat wants to jump on the counters and refrigerator, she'll do that. She's taking advantage of you in the most literal sense of the phrase, but if asked point blank most people would say that a cat is a lower life form. Why? Because cats don't think and reason using complex rationale? Because cats don't slave away night and day working two jobs while getting a degree? Cats don't worry or stress on an hourly basis. They don't wake up late and freak out.

Cats are the highest life form because they've found a way to survive (and have a pretty high quality of life) while doing very little.

I'm not sure what your point is. you're assuming all cats have a pampering owner who chooses to do all that for the cat and allows the cat to do all these things. there are plenty of cats that don't have these luxuries and live their lives similar to a raccoon. even if we assume all cats live this way, it's not the cat's mental prowess that establishes and maintains this lifestyle. it's entirely contingent on the human and just luck on the cat's part really
  11. anything by darren arnofsky or david lynch particularly 'the fountain' and 'mulholland dr.'

terry gilliam is another great director 'fear and loathing' 'brazil' '12 monkeys'

good call on 'who's afraid of virginia wolfe?' shakeepuddn! I love films that are nearly all dialogue with only a couple sets yet keep you entertained throughout. like '12 angry men' or 'stalag 17' or 'john carpenter's the thing'

a movie I recently saw that is quite artistic and interesting is 'enter the void' - very unique perspective as well

'eternal sunshine of the spotless mind', 'being john malchovich', 'adaptation', 'the curious case of benjamin button', 'shutter island', 'event horizon' and its so well known but I still love 'the matrix' so much

  12. itachi! Long time no see, what's up man  Haven't been on brainden in forever it seems but this topic opened a potentially interesting can of worms so we'll see. Also, haven't forgotten the untitled PHOENIX project ;D I did get that writers guild thing in the mail last year.

& From what you're saying it sounds like you're gonna be voting for Ron paul 2012

hey what's up! project phoenix ftw! def. gonna get back on that ride when the time is right =) and it will be in a year or two ;)

I do support Ron Paul to an extent but he takes things a bit too far imo. he's still the closest to my philosophy out there. everyone else seems corrupt or just plain stupid...

  13. creative writing for pure mental stimulation is for me

for the build up, I like doing things that don't require as much thinking like reading and playing rpgs, or just something repetitive like exercise. when I'm done, my mind feels fresh and it all just flows out in my writing for hours without stopping
