Hi guys, Circumstances have dictated that the Den is lower on my priorities than I would like - hopefully, normal service will be resumed ASAP. In the meantime, I'll look in as and when I can. In response to the above: Hey up, thissen , Wilson (even tho I'm not a Yorkie: about 70 or so miles SE ish of you, from what I can make out) Sorry but gotta say no. PG, t'would be churlish of me to 'no', as your answer meets both criteria, so OK, but I'll leave it open as well.... EDM, - poppet - It is wrong but if you take one of your words and add an additional word (choice of 2) you have a relatively good clue........! So:

    Hi Glyc, you've got PEERS = 1 and I think it should be 0 (with PEARS= 1 & _ _ A _ _ given ) FLANK

Further to the above... How gormless am I?.... fell into my own trap of seeing the wrong part of speech! In your 2nd answer, the 2nd part could of course be a 'trimmer': but I still can't equate the first part with 'broke'. But then, the way the brain cell is working, I could easily have missed something obvious. Pls let me know if I have.

EDIT: added to spoiler Thanks for keeping this one alive PG, I think it had stalled a bit. Sorry, but got to say no to both. Purely on the grounds that 'trimmer' implies a comparative, and not so in your answers - in this case it's not a comparative. I am glad, though, that you picked this one, as it's the one I had most trouble with (and still do) as I had to go for a less well-known usage of the word. If I'd gone for the more obvious, I think it would've been a 'gimme'. Hope its not tooo obscure. I now appreciate the angst of a puzzle-setter.......
