@ chicory & others playing ... I hope we manage to solve this by early Saturday morning or I'm going to be frustrated this weekend (away from computer) ... we can do it! No, the other three words do not start with E. Just typed in word two in my google toolbar and the auto finish drop down menu prominantly listed the answer which I know you would immediately recognize as the connection.

Not this either. Think about the other two answers already derived. Same level of complication with the remainder. A root word with something added or subtracted or rearranged. These are similar. Line three is even simpler if you can notice the play (have used it once before). And again, knowing the theme will be of great help.

Yes, that's correct. Now follow the directions as to where to place your answer and voila, second word solved? Adding: Then hopefully the theme or the connection of the five words can be guessed thereby suggesting possibilities for the other three words.

Am afraid I'm dense again. Dont understand tails? tiger_lily111 had some insight into this one in her earlier post. You are correct that lifeline should have been one word. Also checked plead and that was a typo too but plead (pronounced pled) is an alternative spelling. And did we ever solve the second pairing?

No, and I fear I have totally muddled things up. Still think all would be better off knocking out the second word from the second pairing first.
