Casting Shadows

Question

Splitting time between heaven and earth.

Valueable lessons of telling worth.

A long time ago they were unsurmounted.

Scored before penmanship even was counted.

Codified simply, five fingers, two hands.

The closer to beam, increasing demands.

Start once again with this knowing jab.

A custom to stick, not intending to stab.

The truth simply hidden, revealed in this frame.

Now tell me please, of this subject, its name.

That five fingers, two hands might refer to five fingers on two hands, rather than five fingers on each hand. So maybe inequality?

Also, I got the random crazy guess of "gecko." I google imaged gecko and they indeed have five fingers on each hand (though maybe I got an image of something else, lol). Plus they jab with their tongues, and their prey sticks to it. Maybe reptiles in general. Dinosaurs!

edit:

Some type of writing utensil? Like those old ink feather pens?

I'm convinced that that's it. If it isn't I'll be very upset!

Wow, nice. But how do they fit the first two lines? Besides that though, I think they fit everything... nice work Sven =)

I don't know about line 2... but...

They fly through the air, so they spend their time in "heaven" air, and ground.

Am almost afraid to say but please dont be very upset. Probably not any consolation but you slipped on an intentional misdirection. So not a perfect ten.

am guessing the word splitting? and maybe metaphorically the pedestal young gymnasts are put on?

I am glad to see that some of my other thoughts have not been guessed but here goes

Geometry?

Parts of this make me think of the Pryamids

or possibly Masonry

or maybe Stonehenge

edit for one more thought: the seven wonders of the world

I have a feeling that there. may be some word play in this riddle.

Good guesses all. Your first one from before I would call a little closer than these.

the old roman calendars. They measured time on Earth but were lunar based (heavens). They originated around 753 BC (I did some Wiki 'research') which I would assume predates pens and there were 10 months. I can't find a connection to every line, but it does have similarities with HM's initial guess of a sundial.

Geometry, made me think of... what's it called? Compass? The thing you used to draw circles. And then the thing that has a similar shape, used for navigating - sextant!!!?!?!?!?

You guys dont have it yet. Getting closer I feel. Working off the concept of old I think is helpful. HM, no movie reference here,. DD and DN, yours are very well conceived and match perfectly for the first half of the riddle but fall off a little toward the end. EDM, you had a great line of thought yesterday which was closer than these two.
