Question

Once men, young and old all fondled me

before my competition spoke so sweetly

(she thinks she knows it all)

but I offer you perfection, and consistency

I also love adventure, and will gladly lead

O' let me be your companion, I promise to be true

and give you every inch of space your due.

yay, you did it!!!! I will exlain

Compass is the answer. Everyone used compasses, and kept them in their pockets, taking them out to look at. the second part refers to a GPS unit(competition) ;who needs a compass when a voice tells you where to go.
