Question

(I've tried "search" and I've looked over the various forums, and I can't find examples of this. I'm sorry if I've duplicated a post.)

I like BUTTER but I don't like GOATS

-----------------------------

For people who haven't played this game, here's how it works in general:

First, the OP makes a statement of the form "I like xxxx but I don't like yyyy".

Then, players ask questions.

You can ask, "Do you like zzz?"

--the OP will answer "Yes, I like zzz" or "No, I don't like zzz"

--if the OP wants to show off his/her erudition and/or quick thinking, he/she will answer as much as possible with something like "Yes, I like zzz, but I don't like www" or "No, I don't like zzz, but I DO like www"

If a player wants to show off how well they understand the OP's rule, their query might take the form,

"I bet you like qqq" or

"I bet you don't like qqq"

The OP will answer as before.

If a player wants to guess THE RULE, he/she should put it in a spoiler. If it's wrong, the OP will expose the guess, along with a counterexample. If it's right, the OP will congratulate the player, and announce that the rule is now known. (Might leave the game in play, I suppose. How do you folks do this in MasterWord?

I see that in Masterword, the OP's responses contain all past queries and answers. That seems very humane. That should probably be done here, too.

I like cabs not rides

I like peace not war

I like garfield not tweety

I like images not mirrors

I like cages not monkeys

I will pm the rule if anyone asks me, if it's kept a secret. ;)

no hurry. These things deserve lots of thought. the last one was admirably simple and it took 3 days? I hate to sound repetitive, but I like your responses! Thanks for the entertainment. Now, to scratch my head some more...

Nope, although everyone is still welcome to offer potential likes/dislikes. :D

If it's too difficult, just say so. ;)

Slick, Since you've said Grayven's proposed rule is wrong, and t8^3's rule is wrong, it is most cool if you give a counterexample for each. For example, give us

(for Grayven's rule) either a word with c or g that you don't like OR a word without c or g that you do like

(for t8..'s rule) either a word with c or g followed by a vowel that you don't like or a word with c or g followed by a consonant that you do like (in fact, you've done this, with "peaches")

Apparently, this is a pretty simple rule that still gives us quite a challenge, so that's great. Please help us out by some directed counterexamples! (You've given us a challenge, now you get a challenge as well!)

Nice counterexamples! I'm certainly shocked. The "cough, not cold", "arriverderci, not ciao" and "cage not cell" are particularly eye-opening. I've got to do some more head-scratching...

I am willing to help more.

1. I can pm the answer to someone for a second opinion about being too difficult. OR>

2. I can give a subtle clue or slight portion of the answer. ;)

I would propose neither. You've got an interesting puzzle going...I'm eager to keep thinking about it (admittedly I may not be quick about it, but at least I'm back from vacation...)
