Question

The International Enchantments Festival was held this year in Liverpool, England, and just about filled the town's finer hotels to capacity. Among the leading exhibitions were five new enchanted objects, each designed by a different person (including Prof. Kimil), each of which reputedly had a different capability. Unfortunately, each had a different type of breakdown during the demonstration of its skills. Can you discover, in order of exhibition, the names of the inventor and his or her charmed object, what each object could do, and a description of its breakdown?

1. The vase (which didn't explode) appeared sometime before the object that plays piano.

2. The object charmed to change a baby's diaper kept tipping over until the child's distraught parents called a stop to the show; this object isn't Prof. Lobiesk's creation.

3. Mr. Phantom's object (which is either the quill or the tripod) didn't appear third.

4. The object programmed to assemble Danish furniture (which didn't explode or run around in circles) appeared either first or fourth.

5. Prof. Black's object appeared sometime before the object that wouldn't move.

6. The frying pan and the object that plays piano are, in some order, the object that started to pour out smoke and the object that appeared second.

7. The tripod doesn't draw humorous caricatures.

8. The quill didn't appear just before the frying pan.

9. The object that wouldn't move wasn't programmed to assemble Danish furniture.

10. The frying pan appeared sometime before Prof. Mott's object.

11. The tripod appeared sometime after the object that prepares French cuisine.

12. Prof. Kimil's object appeared just before the boot.

come on someone figure it out! I can't!

There's a separate forum called Homework Help if you want someone to point you in the right direction (without spoiling the fun).

In the spirit of that forum:

Try to find a good spot to start:

- Find a category (either name, object, purpose, breakdown description) for which you can exhaustively rule things out using multiple clues. This will help you match things in different categories and start your table right.

- Find clues that give explicit references to the order of objects/purposes/breakdown description. This will help you establish a timeline for the shows and provide a basis on interpreting clues that contain relative order "just before", "sometime after",etc.

- What couldn't the object that was supposed to assemble Danish furniture suffer from?

- When did the frying pan appear?

Clue 8 appears to be inconsistent with the others.

I found a unique solution using all the clues and with the help of clue 8.

Don't see the inconsistency, unless you take "called a stop to the show"=5th place, which I chose to semantically ignore.

I posted my attempted answer here: http://brainden.com/forum/index.php?/topic/13512-solve-it/page__p__266504#entry266504

But! just to make things easier!

I just spent a while trying to figure this out. I have no idea if I'm right or not but I think I have everything down to where it doesn't interfere with the hints given.

1. Vase - Made by Black - Draws humorous caricatures - Ran around in circles

2. Frying Pan - Made by Kimil - Prepares French cuisine - Exploded!

3. Boot - Made by Lobiesk - Plays the piano - Didn't move

4. Quill - Made by Phantom - Assembles Danish furniture - Started pouring out smoke

5. Tripod - Made by Motts - Changes Diapers - Kept tipping over

If not that the only way I can see it being changed is...

1. Vase - Made by Black - Prepares French cuisine - Ran around in circles

2. Frying Pan - Made by Kimil - Draws Humorous caricatures - Didn't move

3. Boot - Made by Lobiesk - Plays the piano - Exploded!

4. Quill - Made by Phantom - Assembles Danish furniture - Started pouring out smoke

5. Tripod - Made by Motts - Changes Diapers - Kept tipping over

Anyone else get something similar? Is this wrong? D:

@Skyenet - Not sure how in which order you followed the clues. However I think both your solutions break clue no. 6

As I said

... I did not interpret clue 2 the same - "stop the show" = 5th place. If you ignore that possible meaning, the other clues give an unique solution:

First note that the object programmed to assemble Danish furniture did not explode (clue 4), did not run around in circles (clue 4), is not the object that wouldn't move (clue 9), is not the one tipping over (clue 2, the diaper changer does that), so there is only one breakdown possibility - (from clue 6) the object that started to pour out smoke was the one programmed to assemble Danish furniture.

From clue 6, the object that plays piano and the frying pan are, in some order, the object that appeared second and the object that appeared either 1st or 4th (from clue 4). Since an object cannot both play piano and assemble Danish furniture, it is clear that the frying pan is the object that stated to pour out smoke instead of assembling Danish furniture (and appeared either 1st or 4th) and the object that plays piano appeared second. From clue 1, the vase should have appeared before the object that plays piano (which is second) which leads to the vase appearing first. Since the vase and the frying pan cannot share a spot, it follows that the frying pan appeared 4th.

We used up clues 1, 4, 6, 9 so far.

order - name - object - purpose - breakdown description

1st - ? - vase - ? - ?

2nd - ? - ? - plays piano - ?

3rd - ? - ? - ? - ?

4th - ? - frying pan - assemble Danish furniture - pour out smoke

5th - ? - ? - ? - ?

Clue 10, frying pan was fourth so Prof. Mott's object is 5th.

order - name - object - purpose - breakdown description

1st - ? - vase - ? - ?

2nd - ? - ? - plays piano - ?

3rd - ? - ? - ? - ?

4th - ? - frying pan - assemble Danish furniture - pour out smoke

5th - Mott - ? - ? - ?

From clue 3, Mr Phantom's object (which is not the vase or the frying pan so it did not appear 1st or 4th) did not appear 3rd. Only possibility is second.

order - name - object - purpose - breakdown description

1st - ? - vase - ? - ?

2nd - Phantom - ? - plays piano - ?

3rd - ? - ? - ? - ?

4th - ? - frying pan - assemble Danish furniture - pour out smoke

5th - Mott - ? - ? - ?

From 12, Prof Kimil's object could not have appeared 1st since "just before the boot" implies Mr. Phantom's object would be a boot (instead of a quill or a tripod as established by clue 3). From 12, Prof Kimil's object could not have appeared 3rd since "just before the boot" implies the 4th object would be a boot (instead of a frying pan as previously established). Hence, Prof Kimil's object appeared fourth and from clue 12, the boot appeared 5th.

order - name - object - purpose - breakdown description

1st - ? - vase - ? - ?

2nd - Phantom - ? - plays piano - ?

3rd - ? - ? - ? - ?

4th - Kimil - frying pan - assemble Danish furniture - pour out smoke

5th - Mott - boot - ? - ?

From clue 8, the quill did not appear just before the frying pan, so it must have appeared 2nd, therefore the tripod appeared 3rd.

order - name - object - purpose - breakdown description

1st - ? - vase - ? - ?

2nd - Phantom - quill - plays piano - ?

3rd - ? - tripod - ? - ?

4th - Kimil - frying pan - assemble Danish furniture - pour out smoke

5th - Mott - boot - ? - ?

From clue 11, the object that prepares French cuisine was exhibited before the tripod (which was 3rd) and since the object that played the piano was 2nd, it must have appeared 1st.

order - name - object - purpose - breakdown description

1st - ? - vase - prepare French cuisine - ?

2nd - Phantom - quill - plays piano - ?

3rd - ? - tripod - ? - ?

4th - Kimil - frying pan - assemble Danish furniture - pour out smoke

5th - Mott - boot - ? - ?

From clue 7, the tripod does not draw humorous caricatures. Only other possibility is for it to change diapers, which means from clue 2 that it kept tipping over. Also, it was not Prof Lobiesk's creation, leaving only Prof. Black. This leaves only one choice for Prof Lobiesk and the object that draws humorous caricatures.

order - name - object - purpose - breakdown description

1st - Lobiesk - vase - prepare French cuisine - ?

2nd - Phantom - quill - plays piano - ?

3rd - Black - tripod - change diapers - tipped over

4th - Kimil - frying pan - assemble Danish furniture - pour out smoke

5th - Mott - boot - draw humourous caricatures - ?

From clue 5, the object that wouldn't move was last.

order - name - object - purpose - breakdown description

1st - Lobiesk - vase - prepare French cuisine - ?

2nd - Phantom - quill - plays piano - ?

3rd - Black - tripod - change diapers - tipped over

4th - Kimil - frying pan - assemble Danish furniture - pour out smoke

5th - Mott - boot - draw humourous caricatures - would not move

From clue 1 the vase did not explode, which leaves only running around in circles and finishes the table:

order - name - object - purpose - breakdown description

1st - Lobiesk - vase - prepare French cuisine - run around in circles

2nd - Phantom - quill - plays piano - explode

3rd - Black - tripod - change diapers - tipped over

4th - Kimil - frying pan - assemble Danish furniture - pour out smoke

5th - Mott - boot - draw humourous caricatures - would not move

2nd - ?

2nd - Phantom - quill - plays piano - ?
3rd - Black - tripod - change diapers - tipped over
4th - Kimil - frying pan - assemble Danish furniture - pour out smoke
5th - Mott - boot - draw humourous caricatures - ?

From clue 5, the object that wouldn't move was last.

order - name - object - purpose - breakdown description
1st - Lobiesk - vase - prepare French cuisine - ?
2nd - Phantom - quill - plays piano - ?
3rd - Black - tripod - change diapers - tipped over
4th - Kimil - frying pan - assemble Danish furniture - pour out smoke
5th - Mott - boot - draw humourous caricatures - would not move

From clue 1 the vase did not explode, which leaves only running around in circles and finishes the table:

order - name - object - purpose - breakdown description
1st - Lobiesk - vase - prepare French cuisine - run around in circles
2nd - Phantom - quill - plays piano - explode
3rd - Black - tripod - change diapers - tipped over
4th - Kimil - frying pan - assemble Danish furniture - pour out smoke
5th - Mott - boot - draw humourous caricatures - would not move

Nice job.

I couldn't resist the temptation to having the baby diaper stop the show,

nor imagine how anything could follow it. Specious or inconsistent clue.
