0 k-man
I guess you don't really want people to figure out the combination to your safe because the clues provided are not sufficient to come to a single solution. Number clues narrow it down to 3 possible number assignments 1 Rubber Rubber Rubber 2 Lipstick Lipstick Lipstick 3 Wire Paper Pen 4 Paper Wire Wire 5 Nail Wood Wood 6 Pen Pen Paper 7 Wood Nail Nail I interpreted the position clues containing "between" as "immediately between", which resulted in the following order: Paper, Wire, Rubber, Nail, Wood stick, Lipstick, Pen. Since position clues don't establish any left/right order a reverse order is also possible. If "between" doesn't mean "immediately between" then even more orders are possible. So, as a result, the following 6 combinations are all possible and match given clues: 4315726 6275134 3417526 6257143 6417523 3257146 P.S. Clue #7 is not needed if "between" in clue #11 means "immediately between".
0 curr3nt
Rubber = 1 Lipstick = 2 Wire = 3 Paper = 4 Nail = 5 Pen = 6 Woodstick = 7 Rubber = 1 (#6) Nail = 5; Lipstick = 2; Wire = 3 (#5 Rubber + Nail = Lipstick * Wire and #1 Wire > Lipstick) Woodstick = 7; Paper = 4; Pen = 6 (#8 Woodstick + 3(Wire) = Paper + Pen and #4 Paper < 5) Two possible combinations: 4315726 6275134 I can't figure which side of the nail to place the rubber and the woodstick. ...missed the 1+7=2*4 Edited January 21, 2011 by curr3nt

0 Guest
wouldn't "7-Paper is beside Wire." be useless when "11-Wire is between Rubber and Paper." already tells us that? also, is this the solution... 6315724 or 4275136 Edited January 22, 2011 by Cpt Logic

0 bhramarraj
Let A,B,C,D,E,F and G represent wire,lipstick,nail,pen,paper,rubber and wood stick respectively.Then according to conditions given at serial nos: 1- A > B 4- C > E 5- C + F = B * A 6- F = 1 8- G + A = E + D From 5 & 6, C + 1 = B * A. Which is possible when: [a] B * A = 2 * 3, AND C = 5. B * A = 2 * 4, and C = 7 Then from 1, [a] B = 2, A = 3 and C = 5 Similarly possibility B = 2, A = 4, and C = 7 Now from 8, we have G + A = E + D, & from 4, Possibility [a] : E = 4, D = 6, G = 7, A = 3, B = 2, C = 5, (F = 1 is already given) Possibility : E = 6, D = 3, G = 5, A = 4, B = 2, C = 7, F = 1 Possibility [c] : E = 3, D = 6, G = 5, A = 4, B = 2, C = 7, F = 1. From conditions 2, 3, 7, 9, 10, and 11, arrangement is like this : Paper : Wire : Rubber : Nail : Wood Stick : Lipstick : Pen OR Pen : Lipstick : Wood Stick : Nail : Rubber : Wire : Paper So the possible codes could be many.
