Question

On my table I put seven things in a straight line,I gave to each thing a Number(1 to 7)in a specific order.

This seven digit Number is the combination number of my save( :ph34r: )try to open it, if:

1-Wire No.> Lipstick No.

2-The Nail is in the middle.

3-lipstick is beside pen.

4-Nail No. > Paper No.

5-Nail No.+ Rubber No.=(Lipstick No.)(Wire No.)

6-The Rubber has No. 1

7-Paper is beside Wire.

8-Wood stick No.+Wire No.=Paper No.+Pen No.

9-Wood stick is between Nail and Lipstick.

10-Rubber is beside Nail.

11-Wire is between Rubber and Paper.

Good luck :thumbsup:

I guess you don't really want people to figure out the combination to your safe because the clues provided are not sufficient to come to a single solution. ;)

Number clues narrow it down to 3 possible number assignments

I interpreted the position clues containing "between" as "immediately between", which resulted in the following order: Paper, Wire, Rubber, Nail, Wood stick, Lipstick, Pen. Since position clues don't establish any left/right order a reverse order is also possible. If "between" doesn't mean "immediately between" then even more orders are possible.

So, as a result, the following 6 combinations are all possible and match given clues:

4315726

6275134

3417526

6257143

6417523

3257146

P.S. Clue #7 is not needed if "between" in clue #11 means "immediately between".

Rubber = 1

Lipstick = 2

Wire = 3

Paper = 4

Nail = 5

Pen = 6

Woodstick = 7

Rubber = 1 (#6)

Nail = 5; Lipstick = 2; Wire = 3 (#5 Rubber + Nail = Lipstick * Wire and #1 Wire > Lipstick)

Woodstick = 7; Paper = 4; Pen = 6 (#8 Woodstick + 3(Wire) = Paper + Pen and #4 Paper < 5)

Two possible combinations:

4315726

6275134

I can't figure which side of the nail to place the rubber and the woodstick.

...missed the 1+7=2*4

...the number assignment can be only

1 Rubber

2 Lipstick

3 Wire

4 Pen

5 Nail

6 Paper

7 Wood

but the positions can still be reversed, so 2 possible solutions:

6315724 and 4275136

well done....and the first combination is correct !!

wouldn't "7-Paper is beside Wire." be useless when "11-Wire is between Rubber and Paper." already tells us that?

also, is this the solution...

The..(11) will force the rubber place.

The second No. is correct,(the mirror)is also correct .

Let A,B,C,D,E,F and G represent wire,lipstick,nail,pen,paper,rubber and wood stick respectively.Then according to conditions given at serial nos:

1- A > B

4- C > E

5- C + F = B * A

6- F = 1

8- G + A = E + D

From 5 & 6, C + 1 = B * A. Which is possible when:

[a] B * A = 2 * 3, AND C = 5.

B * A = 2 * 4, and C = 7

Then from 1, [a] B = 2, A = 3 and C = 5

Similarly possibility B = 2, A = 4, and C = 7

Now from 8, we have G + A = E + D, & from 4,

Possibility [a] : E = 4, D = 6, G = 7, A = 3, B = 2, C = 5, (F = 1 is already given)

Possibility : E = 6, D = 3, G = 5, A = 4, B = 2, C = 7, F = 1

Possibility [c] : E = 3, D = 6, G = 5, A = 4, B = 2, C = 7, F = 1.

From conditions 2, 3, 7, 9, 10, and 11, arrangement is like this :

Paper : Wire : Rubber : Nail : Wood Stick : Lipstick : Pen OR

Pen : Lipstick : Wood Stick : Nail : Rubber : Wire : Paper

So the possible codes could be many.
