Question

It swells, it grows, it rolls above a roll

Appears without effort, but does need control

It’s all consuming, you need to train it

When fully grown, so hard to restrain it

The breathy breadth, the full effect

You’d be impaired not to detect

(Now pay attention to the end of this ditty

To solve it, do know, it wants to be pretty)

So here’s one in my, it seems, most popular style. All clues fit equally well two unrelated correct answers. When you get them both, you will easily arrange them in a very well-known expression. So solve the riddle once, solve the riddle twice, and tell me when it’s done.

A wave?

no, but thank you for leading the guesses

just think that the answer (both of them) needs to fit each clue, not just some of them, so with your guess it would be difficult to "train it" for example or "wanting to be pretty" would be a stretch...

Voice?

yes, very good, that has everything to do with one of the answers - but is not quite the answer. still it is so close that if you find the second answer, this guess might suffice to break the riddle, when you put it all together.

Infectious Laughter?

no. try perhaps to find just one answer first, not both together

try free associations, pick out any number of words from the lines, look at them together and see what they make you think of

Usually dont do this but have limited time on my machine this afternoon...

swan song? or high seas (C's)? or swan song? or drum solo?

one part of one of your guesses, so one word you have written down, is one of the answers I am looking for. so filter through and settle on one word you already have, one that you have clearly found strong associations for.

it just hit me...."Potty mouth"

I know this may not be right but

no, but a lot of you are kind of dancing around one of the answers, one of you has actually set it down as part of a phrase, one gave a version of it...

i'll see if we get closer, or at least define one answer (hint to you, I want what you just guessed but the exact opposite) before I help

also please ask questions, happy to discuss any line or group of words you are stuck on

had meant to include opera singer from that list I made at lunch.

songstress?

ok the first guest above is spot on

almost too good as you are bridging the two answers already and maybe not seeing the connection i want

so think how you got to this answer, describe the person so to speak through the riddle, what is she like, what is she doing

then look at the title of the riddle, look at the a hint hidden in the last couplet

you are one step away from it, so close

Song?

this is off PG's and my guess earlier.

yes! that is one of the answers you need.

for the other one - look at the words again, any other thing it makes you think of: consuming, training, control, full, swell, roll...

once you find that you should think of a well-known expression in english language

Fat or weight?

It isn't over till the fat lady sings?

haha that's it!

or

is simply THE END, or OVER

you've got fat, you've got a fat lady (wants to be pretty so female)

you've got singing

and so... it's over

there are clues on THE END both in the riddle (last two lines actually give you IN THE END, DITTY or song, and PRETTY - girl singing in the end) and in the title and in the instructions, "tell me when it's over"

WELL DONE
