  1. Framm's turn to shoot or pass. ridiculous
  2. assume the only digits used were on the page numbers and that only numbers were used to number the pages.
  3. Consider the table: 1 = 1 2+3+4 = 1 + 8 5+6+7+8+9 = 8 + 27 10+11+12+13+14+15+16 = 27 + 64 Guess the general law suggested by these examples. Prove it if you can.
  4. I found an old receipt that belonged to Daddy Warbucks. He apparently bought 72 turkeys to donate to charity. The receipt was slightly faded. The cost of the individual turkeys was missing completely and the total price only had some of the digits visible. The total price shows __67.9__ where the underline are numbers that are faded. What is the total price? How much was an individual turkey? Is there a strategy that eliminates the need for brute force or code?
  5. Printing my memoir, i accidentally printed all the pages in my book with page numbers (usually there are a few pages without numbers). The printer printed a total of 1890 digits. How many pages did my book have?
  6. I hope you're not intimating that -1 is also a solution! nice work, but clearly -1 is a false solution and should be disregarded as such leaving only 2
  7. correct. Care to explain your solution?
  8. At a wedding reception n guests have assembled into m groups to converse. (the groups are not necessarily equal sized.) The host is preparing m square cakes, each with an ornate ribbon adorning its perimeter, to serve to the m groups. No guest is allowed to have more than 25 cm2 of cake. Prove that no more than 20*sqrt(mn) cm of ribbon is needed to embellish the m cakes.
  9. Suppose that 7 boys and 13 girls line up in a row. Let S be the number of places in the row where a boy and a girl are standing next to each other. For example, for the row GBBGGGBGBGGGBGBGGBGG we have S = 12. If all possible orders of these 20 people are considered, what is the average value of S? Can you generalize this result to a group of m boys and n girls?
  10. Evaluate the following expression sqrt(2+sqrt(2+sqrt(2+sqrt(2+... repeating forever.
  11. on the right track. think of how stasis would look (the steady state).
  12. There is a circle with a radius of 1 on the ground. A straight line intersects the circle. What is the probability that the length of the chord created by the intersection of the circle and the line is greater than or equal to sqrt(3)?
  13. Which day of the week, Saturday or Sunday, appears more often as the first day of the year?
  14. This one may have been posted already but here it goes: An extraordinary man constructed a special clock where the hour hand and minute hand were identical. It was hard to tell the time when one looked at this clock, but the old man claimed that it is usually straightforward to interpret the positions of hands. For example, at 5:00, when one hand points to 12 and the other to 5, there is only one possible interpretation: if the hour hand pointed to 12, it would not be possible for a minute hand to point to 5. On the other hand, the old man admitted, there are a few ambiguous positions that might be interpreted in two different ways. The question is: how many times - during a 12 hour period- are the hands in such an ambiguous position?
  15. Mr. White and Mr. Brown work for Giant Insurance. The company offers two retirement plans, both of which are based on purchasing the company's stock. An employee can either put a fixed amount of money into his retirement plan every month to buy Giant insurance stock (plan A, which is Mr, White's choice), or buy a fixed number of Giant Insurance shares (plan B, which is Mr. Brown's choice). If there are no other fees connected with these retirement plans, which plan produces the lowest cost per share?
  16. The dice game chuck-a-luck is played in some casinos. The rules are extremely simple. You bet $1 on a number from 1 to 6. Three dice are rolled. If your number does not appear on any dice, you lose your bet. If the number appears once, you recover your bet. If it appears twice or three times, you get $2 or $3, respectively (these amounts include your original $1 bet). What are your odds? For bonus points, assume there are five additional friends and each person, including yourself from the original problem (so six people total), bets on a different number. Now what are the odds of winning against the house (for each better separately)?
  17. I forgot to mention that in black jack you are trying to get 21 points without going over, an Ace is worth either 1 or 11, the player who has it can choose which, and all face cards are worth 10.
  18. You are playing blackjack and get an ace and a 6. The dealer's up card is a 6. What should you do? Hit, stand, or double? (There are no other players) basic vocabulary: Hit, get another card (this can be done repeatedly until you choose to stop or bust). Stand, you don't need another card. Double, is to add additional money to your initial bet on the terms that you are dealt one, and only one more card, you will receive no additional cards after doubling. You can double for UP TO the amount of your initial bet. Splitting, is not an option in this case and so won't be defined. Lastly, the dealer will 'act' or make their play (hit or stand) after you finish with yours.
  19. There is a crowd of people in a room. Each person is asked to select some other person in the room (without telling anyone). At a signal, every person tries to approach the selected person and stand behind his/her back. What patter would emerge when "the dust settles"?
