  12. the requested solution allows only one weighing (which is not the case of your procedure) btw, you may use weighing machine (eg. a digital one with numbers) - so no pair of scales (that resolves your second query as well)

    Belt

    I hate to be anal, but a belt is three dimensional. Even if the thickness of the belt were small enough to be neglegable, the belt would still have a front and a back. At most, the surface area of one side is 2 cm^2, resulting in an original length of 48 cm. You could just change the puzzle to state that "After three such wishes, the surface area of the front side was 4 cm^2." puzzle edited

  16. every single page should be easy to print (just the puzzles without menu) ... try to print http://brainden.com/logic-puzzles.htm I have created a file with all solutions long time ago (.doc and .txt) - check http://brainden.com/solutions.htm regarding weekly updates, if you find an automated solution for that (maybe some mod in phpbb) you can let me know btw, I have several ideas which I would like to try ... they include: 1. creating rss channel for new puzzles (so that you can see new puzzles in your rss reader) 2. creating weekly newsletters (to list all new puzzles added in previous week) 3. ranking users 4. new mods etc. all of it depends on when phpbb3 stable version comes out and if I have some time (a lot of time ) for that
  17. for this particular puzzle, I used words "accurate weighing-machine" and thought that it would be clear that it returns numbers ... for some other puzzles I used words "pair of scales" where I meant two panes that can be brought to balance I see your point ... I have replaced "balancing" with 'weighing"

  21. With all of the discussion on this one, it surprises me no one caught this. Why did no one notice that the "No inhabitant has exactly 518 hairs" does not specify that those hairs need to be on their head? When you take this into account, you can have an infinite number of body and head hair combinations, as long as they don't equal 518. Therefore, this puzzle does not have an answer because it grows to infinity. Example: I am bald. I am the only bald guy in town. I have 1000 hairs on my palms. This meets the both Criteria 1 and Criteria 2 unless I am mistaken. Criteria 3 states that (inhabitants > number of hair on a person). Therefore the number of inhabitants in my example is any number greater than 1000. Correct me if I am wrong, but I do not think that I am. actually, there was 1 person in the village who had some hair (of his dog) left on his head ... I forgot to mention that as well ... and now I remember, one old lady had a wig (from not her own hair)
