Much more elegant, additionally with your method you can actually determine 16 bottles with 4 rats Since using binary you can count from 0-15 with 4 digits.

I don't like this cruetly to animals though... If it takes 24 hours for the rat to die though you will only be able to perform the first stage of your test in time . I don't see a readily available solution though because I was going this route as well.

The definition "four-sided" implies that two sides aren't end to end (180 degrees) or it is only a 3-sided figure. I have a hard time with this definition as well

Make a chart similar to Semper Rideo's then it simply becomes a visual inspection. I actually did the problem then realized this looks like your homework so I erased my work but let you the set up . I left in my times for the Melbourne location being open, so you can see how I visually graphed the times. Just remember to add or subtract to get the start times for each other location. For example it is 9pm in Detroit when its noon in Melbourne. So when it's 8am in Detroit (open time), you had to add 11 hours to 9pm, so you need to add 11 hours to noon to get the Detroit opening time in Melbourne time. Times.xls
  15. Yes and No. I believe Tuckleton's answer is correct, however I still have a hard time with it. Edit: I follow now
