  1. i have a game night, but we just play one game: Go. its the immortal game.

When we started the board game night, I actually wanted a weekly go and chess group. It kind of got away from that, though.

  2. Over the last several years, the board game industry has boomed with companies like Fantasy Flight re-releasing old games with new art and higher quality pieces, new Euro-style games getting attention in America, game versions being released to play online or on iOS, Kickstarter having an awesome section for board games, and self-publishing of games made thousands of times easier. The release of many co-op games probably helped quite a bit, as well.

Last year, my wife and I (and Hirkala) started a board game group in our local area. We meet once a week and play board games at a coffee shop. Our collection of games has grown considerably over the last year and we've had a lot of fun trying out new games with many different mechanics. The second meeting of every month, we run an RPG session, as well, if anyone there wants to play.

Hopefully this new boom will change the world view on board games (away from Monopoly and the like).

Feel free to answer any of the questions below.

Does anyone here run a board game night or attend one?

    What games do you like?

If you don't currently play, do you at least have an interest?

What mechanics do you like in a game? What don't you like?

Our list of games we have and games I'm planning on getting is below. It's actually considerably smaller than some collections I've seen. If you have any suggestions, let me know. I always love looking at new games.

I've also just found Compounded (a chemistry board game) on Kickstarter. It looks worthwhile enough to add to the collection.

  3. Sliding smoothly down a dragon's spine,

Straddling equally both sides of the line,

    Branches without a tree,

    To live in harmony,

One must follow the path of the sine

If you delight in the writing of Zola,

Or are mesmerized by the curves of Lola,

    Throw a ball,

    Let it fall,

    And appreciate the resulting parabola.

  4. His neighbor may be highly cagey,

But he's so calm it'll drive you crazy,

    You'll sound like a fool,

    But he's super cool,

    Cuz his symbol is CClF3.

Still doesn't really fit the third line, but it's super cool.

Edit1: Inhaling Freon will make you 'tarded.

Edit: Actually...probably He. I'm gonna rewrite shortly.

  5. I'm probably missing something clever here...

There were a pair of twins from Bali,

To whom hanging together was folly,

    One always felt left out,

    But neither would pout,

Instead they blamed it on Molly..

Find him digging in the sand,

Or in his valley high in demand,

    With stress he can cope,

    But give him some dope,

And he'll let you measure his hand.

Girl, you're so fine and lean,

With a frame so bare it's obscene,

    Put you on tape,

    The critics will gape,

And never forget your name is Nadine.

Without anything he can go on,

Bouncing here, there, ping, and pong,

    Pass him an invite,

    He'll eagerly excite,

For such is the life of a Kong.

His neighbor may be highly cagey,

But he's so calm it'll drive you crazy,

    You'll sound like a fool,

    But he's super cool,

Cuz his symbol is African Daisy.

  6. If I understand correctly, you cannot create a 1x1x1 cube (using the same units as the original grid) without cutting some off or overlapping. Any cube will only use 6 faces, while the original sheet has 9 faces. You must cut or overlap exactly three squares every time.

  7. Choose 8.

The second player must take 7.

    Choose 6

The second player must take 1.

    Choose 5

The second player cannot stop your next move of taking either 4 or 2.

I see now, however, that this isn't the problem we're trying to solve.

  8. Given these constraints, the carnivore should win in almost all (3/4) cases. The herbivores will never have enough information by the time the carnivore can kill two of them.

N1 - an arbitrary herbivore is killed and each herbivore eliminates two possibilities of his species (no information is gained about other herbivores)

D1 - all creatures must vote. As there are four creatures left, all three herbivores must vote for the carnivore in order to kill him.* If the vote ever comes down to a 2-2 split (and the carnivore is not part of that split), he can change his vote to create a 3v1 vote, and he wins. All other cases are dependent on when the vote "ends" and the votes are actually tallied (assumption: after everyone votes at least once and a plurality is reached). If this phase cannot end without a creature dying, the carnivore has an extreme advantage.

N2 - the herbivores now have a chance to determine what their species is, but it is too late. The carnivore will eliminate another herbivore.

D2 - The last herbivore will know who the carnivore is, but will never be able to eliminate him since the vote will be 1v1 and no plurality will ever be reached.

*Note: This creates a situation where a re-evaluation might even change the minds of those herbivores.

  9. Nice to see you back in these parts, Araver. I have some observations from playing the game, but certainly no proof (or disproof) as to a perfect strategy. I think it largely depends on when the carnivore shares information.

EDIT: Prematurely hit submit. I'll wait to see what comes up.

  10. And also, if you spy and find their role won't you automatically learn their faction as there is only one of each role?

Their Role wouldn't be "spy, block, kill, etc." It would be the name of the actual role. You might not know their faction, though, if you spy an Indy. The "role", though, is the name listed before the role description.

  11. Chess puzzle thread is a reasonable suggestion.

Solver can be the one to post a new puzzle.

I would certainly be interested in this thread.

There is no solution to the board as it is.

Assume the White King is anywhere but b3 or c2 (even though one is impossible). It must be black to move, as he is in check. White's previous move, must have been Ba4+, but he has no valid squares he could have moved from that wouldn't have already been checking the Black King.

So the White King must be on b3 (c2 is impossible). If the White King were on b3, however, he would be in check. It must be White to move. White, however, is in a double check and--in this particular double check--couldn't have been on a3 the previous turn because Black was already controlling that square.
