Question

This is a riddle in the form of Dancer’s.

You can derive two different answers.

Put them together, and you’ll be gleaning,

Another answer with a different meaning.

I can swing to and fro,

Meant to ward off any foe,

I can be for things to cling,

Like a vine, on anything.

You can find me at an end,

But where you find me, will depend.

OK, this is premature. Probably should keep plugging along but am getting

foil and wrap?

Am not really understanding the format, any elaborations there?

Are either of the words "hook" or "whip"?

Nope, but very good guesses. Keep thinking these sorts of things, (not directly, but same kind of basicness). Let me say, it was VERY hard to make a riddle which fit both of these words. That's why it was so obscure and vaguish. I'm not going to end up being very proud of it, I think. But, we'll see.

"rope" seems promising...

I expect a LOT of answers. That one is closer than you think. KINDA close. Not in the string, chain, line, way. But, just sort of close.

It is neither, I'm afraid, but you're on a good trail of thoughts for the first. Not so much for the second.

how about stake?

and net?

Oooh! Both are so similar to the answers, in a certain sense.

But, I don't think a stake swings,

A net, not as much as the answer I'm looking for.

Both are like my answers for the vine part, except one might cling, the other might have the vine cling.

Don't forget the end. I don't see how that fits for your answers. One of mine more especially than the other. Both are not always found where they're found: remember that. Hope this helps to clarify the riddle a bit.

a "tail". Horses swing their tails to ward off flies, opossums hang from theirs, and they can be found at the end of animals (but not at every end).

YES!!! I know, I had to stretch to get my riddle said.

TAIL

door or gate? They both swing open/close and are there to keep things out. Plenty of people hang things on their door and a wrought iron gate could have vines. The "at an end" part would be a stretch for either although a door could be at an end of a hallway and a gate could be at an end of a path. And "gate" certainly would combine well with "tail".

Look at your spoiler ^^^

You are exactly right.

So, the final word is.......?

would be "tailgate". I was never clear with Dancer's original riddle. Is "tailgate" the final answer, or the final clue to yet another word that would be the final answer? (if so, I'm thinking "party")

Nope. That's the final answer.
