Put them together, and you’ll be gleaning, Another answer with a different meaning. I can swing to and fro, Meant to ward off any foe, I can be for things to cling, Like a vine, on anything. Keep thinking these sorts of things, (not directly, but same kind of basicness). Let me say, it was VERY hard to make a riddle which fit both of these words. That's why it was so obscure and vaguish. But, I don't think a stake swings, A net, not as much as the answer I'm looking for. Both are like my answers for the vine part, except one might cling, the other might have the vine cling. Don't forget the end. I don't see how that fits for your answers. One of mine more especially than the other. Both are not always found where they're found: remember that. Plenty of people hang things on their door and a wrought iron gate could have vines. The "at an end" part would be a stretch for either although a door could be at an end of a hallway and a gate could be at an end of a path. And "gate" certainly would combine well with "tail".
