0 Guest
Seven youth and Seven maidens Faceless gods and Waters great Who am I? What was my fate? Well...looking from a different point of view, could it be the creation of the world? 7 youths and 7 maidens, referring to the 7 continents we know today, the faceless gods would actually be the one god no one knew (in the christian religion) and the waters great could be the oceans that were made? Just throwin out some ideas.... Edited March 20, 2009 by DforDumb

0 Guest
Answering your question: My reasoning goes as such. The Minoan Civilization was centered on Crete with outlying cities, (colonies) throughout the Aegean area. While King Minos ruled from the island of Crete, there was a significant indication that Thera, now Santorini, might have fit the bill for Plato's Atlantis due to the geological features prior to the eruption of the Volcano and subsequent Tsunami. The Eruption of the Thera/Santorini volcano is currently believed to have been much larger than the Krakatoa eruption, so the Tsunami would have been much bigger, perhaps 20-25 meters high. The Eruption immediately covered the Minoan Cities on Thera with Lava, Pumice, Pyroclastic Ash, and Debris before it was over. Side Note: There was an earthquake that may have caused the Minoans on Thera to flee prior to the Eruption. The case can also be made for Crete being Atlantis as it was impacted both by the Volcanic fallout from Thera/Santorini. The Volcanic Impact would not have eliminated the Minoan Civilization, however the Tsumnami would have wiped out virtually all the Coastal communities on Crete facing Thera. Surviving Minoans on Crete were then subject to retribution by the Athenians, later the Aegeans and the Dorians, and the Minoan Civilization ceased to exist. This retribution by the Athenians incuded smashing the faces of the God/Goddess Icons on Crete. The Gods/Goddess were believed to be basically formless and without name until the took animal or human shape. Smashing the Iconic Faces was an attempt to further destroy the Minoan Culture by destroying their Gods. Side Note: Some Minoans may have been integrated into other Cultures after the Eruption and Tsunami. Side Note: The mythology about the Minotaur, the Labyrinth, the Seven Youths and Seven Maidens, Theses, King Minos all relate to the Minoan homeland on Crete. Therefore, it seems that the legendary location of Atlantis may be a combination of be a combination of Thera/Santorini and Crete, (approx. 70 miles from Thera) as the story told by Plato may have been both a combination of events that were interpreted as one single event at one location as well as the scope being less a city or an Island and exagerated to the Continental level over the approx. 1200 years from the events to Plato's retelling of the Folk Legend. Atlantis then would be the Entire Minoan Civilization on both Thera/Santorini and Crete. All these could be the Atlantis of Legend and the location, while geologically similar to Thera, would be a combination of Thera/Santorini and Crete/Minos. How did I do ... ??
