Question

Many were we who fled underground,

we fled the stones and lions.

Few were we who remained above to try and gather our strength.

Many were we who took over the country,

but few of the old days saw the new,

but they still died happy.

Who were we?

This might be ridiculously easy or impossibly difficult, depending on what you read. Oh and there may be more than 1 possible answer. Post and I will check to see if your answer works.

Dang, apparently the "ridiculously easy" applied here. Yes i was thinking of the Christians. I disagree with the Spartacus answer however becase they did not gain total control of the country. Romulus064 good job! and good job to all who answered.
