CaptainEd
Nobody has guessed the word--indeed TrueMaja and I think there may be some counting errors--post #1673 has the complete query list so far.
Guest
Chidoric, we are wondering (TrueMaja and I) whether there might still be another mistake. Per TrueMaja's reasoning above, the only letters that are in the word are ANT. From ATTENT (3), we know there is only one T. From RATTAN (4), we know there are at least 2 A. From BANANA (3), we know there are only 2 A and only 1 N. So our 6 letter word has 2 A, 1 T, and 1 N, and no other letters of the alphabet. this is correct... there ARE 2 A's, 1 T, and 1 N. and has 2 more DIFFERENT LETTERS. CaptainEd
From Pickle (0)/Tackle(2), we know 1 A 1 T 0 PICKLE From Quaver(1), we know 0 QUVER, so 0 ..C.E...I.KL...PQR..UV.... From Dogmas(1), we know 0 DOGMS, so 0 ..CDE.G.I.KLM.OPQRS.UV.... From Motion, we know 1 N From Friend(1), we know 0 F, so 0 ..CDEFG.I.KLM.OPQRS.UV.... From hatbox(2), we know 0 HBX, so 0 .BCDE.GHI.KLM.OPQRS.UV.X.. From Joyful(0), we know 0 JYF, so 0 .BCDEFGHIJKLM.OPQRS.UV.XY. From wizens(1), we know 0 WZ, so 0 .BCDEFGHIJKLM.OPQRS.UVWXYZ The only letters left are ANT. Edited April 9, 2009 by CaptainEd

Guest
CaptainEd's mysterious and magical spreadsheet for the win? My reasoning yesterday was pretty funny xD When I began it I thought your guesses was pretty weird, when I'd come to the end I found that your guesses were incredibly smart, Good work Captain Edited April 9, 2009 by TrueMaja
Guest
since wzns gives three correct those 2 other letters should be w and z... since it can't be both n and s... (string conflict) given that the current results I get ztanwa, ntawza, ntazwa, ntaazw or ntaawz... there might be some other conflict... I'd guess >>stanza<< and that string should be xxo Am I right? Guest
Yeah indeed, To make my guess clear STANZA (this requires that "string" should be xxo)
CaptainEd
TrueMaja, I'm glad you were able to see a good word through the wrong counts. (Chidoric, that's a cool word, "stanza"!). Now that you mention my spreadsheet, here is Revision 3 of the spreadsheet. Its improvement is that it makes several columns so that up to 40 queries fit in the vertical space of 10. For example, assuming "stanza" to be the target word, our queries so far would yield: string--xxo attent--xoo motion--oo banana--xoo friend--o rattan--oooo pickle--__ tackle--oo quaver--x hatbox--oo dogmas--oo joyful--__ wizens--ooo
