Guest
As we've had 12 hours without a guess, here's another small clue... One character of the answer is amongst the six characters that are yet to be included in any guessed word.
Guest
As we've had 12 hours without a guess, here's another small clue... One character of the answer is amongst the six characters that are yet to be included in any guessed word. Would it be possible for you to double check the previous answers? Last night I "proved" that no word fits the available information. Its probably just a logic error on my part, but if nobody is answering... Guest
After double double checking scores and checking the spelling of the word, I can advise that the scores are as below (unchanged) and that (via OneLook) 25 general dictionaries have entries along with 9 additional specialist dictionaries. millions - xo brunette - ooo computer - oooo tequilas - xx chainsaw - xo paycheck - oo tendrils - xo untoward - xoo business - oo trombone - xxoooo pentagon - xoo rambutan - xoooo Maybe 8 letters makes it too hard to prove but unless someone asks me to post the word (in a spoiler) I will just continue to provide regular clues... The score for trombone shows a 'hit' for every letter except the T and the N.

Guest
Let me make sure that I understand how this works. [none of these should be considered guesses] If the real word is: bmeooraa And the guess: rambutan the result would be: xoooo One a is in the correct place, and gets an x. Other letters which are correct, but in the wrong location are: bmra for four o's If the real word is: bmeooraf and the guess: rambutan the result would be: xooo One a is in the correct place, and gets an x. Other letters which are correct, but in the wrong location are: bmr for three o's The first a would NOT produce an o, because the target word has only one a (which is already represented by an x) is that correct? Guest
intercom I have also eliminated every word in my word list except for the names of 2 obscure Biblical Kings and somehow I don't think you want either of them on your desk, but at least I can add a new word to my list. Guest
millions - xo brunette - ooo computer - oooo tequilas - xx chainsaw - xo paycheck - oo tendrils - xo untoward - xoo business - oo trombone - xxoooo pentagon - xoo rambutan - xoooo brambles - xoooo Let me try to prove that this is impossible: 1. "The score for trombone shows a 'hit' for every letter except the T and the N." So we know that the word contains at least the following letters: ROMBOE, and does not contain T or N 2. computer has four hits. We already know the word contains omer. That means that the word does NOT contain U 3: rambutan has five hits: we know that the word does not contain utn, so ramba must all hit. That adds two a's to the known letters: ROMBOEAA 4: "One character of the answer is amongst the six characters that are yet to be included in any guessed word." Since we have already identified all 8 letters, and all of them have already been used, there is no combination of 8 letters that fits all the given clues (whether or not they form a word). Where did I go wrong?

Guest
Never mind. Solman is correct saying he knows which 2 letters are wrong in trombone. Wombat gave us that info in a spoiler. Edited February 14, 2011 by Maquis
Guest
A much more complicated proof was possible before the hints, but it was so long that I had limited confidence. This far shorter proof (made possible by the hints) seems more straight forward. I must not properly understand the rules.
Guest
Ok, my brain is bit slower but I just spent about a half hour examining Solman's proof and it's sound. If wombat has scored the words correctly then I think his spoiler hints must be incorrect and should be discounted. If the spoiler hint regarding "trombone" is correct and we do indeed know which 2 letters are wrong in that word then all 8 letters are known and they don't match any words in my list. fabpig
I spent a lot of the weekend logicking this and ended up even more confused than I usually am. Guest
I actually spent a lot of time on this on Friday when the only words listed were...... millions - xo brunette - ooo computer - oooo tequilas - xx chainsaw - xo paycheck - oo .....and just those managed to eliminate all but 2 words from my list. I had 1 one word that almost fit the pattern but didn't match the score for millions. I assumed I had made an error someplace and just left it for the weekend. I think now though we have enough scoring proof to say there is an error someplace, but perhaps the error is simply in the spoiler clues and not the scores. Guest
Could it be a hyphenated 9 character word?
fabpig
Or do we have a diphthong? Eg cǽsar

fabpig
and I think we all know that's correct. Only wrongly-scored was rambutan
