I've only been working number 1 but this sticks out in my head

How can T has to equal zero for T+Y to = Y but in the tens collumn T+S=E and there aren't any carry overs because if there were then T+Y wouldn't = Y

(unless Y can represent two different numbers. Is this the case or is there a flaw in the above thinking?)

Yes, Y can represent two different numbers. It represents one number above the line (that is, in the number BEAUTY), and a different number below the line (that is, in the number DISNEY). Furthermore, the two values are different by 1. (These are the OP's explanations.

So, Y + T = Y does not imply that T = 0. In fact, it implies that T = 1 or T = 9.

thanx I've never worked these problems before so i didn't understand the directions well enough :)

I believe one (or ten) possible solution(s) for number three could be:

942318

+44806

======

987124

where p=b could be any number between 0 to 9

Great fun! Thanks for the brain-teasers.

:D
