0 Guest
Use two 2's and standard mathematical symbols (+,-,*,:,.,^,(),sqrt) to make 5. sqrt- 2 2=/+ . .^: %:*= (x / x) / .2 where x=2 (Edited because original had close dupe of nq's answer) Edited January 4, 2009 by Phatfingers

0 Guest
The solution does not involve any other numbers (pi, 1, x, etc)...just the two 2's along with mathematical symbols.

0 Izzy
You can make up your own number system? With a system that only has 3 numbers, (1,2, and 3), 12, when translated into our 10 digit (1-9 and 0) system, equals 5, while 20 makes 6, and 22 makes 8. If we change the system we're translating to to something where 22 would equal 5, then it works. I don't think I know how to do it though... 0 Guest
The answer is in base 10 decimal system. It is not a trick answer and it involves only two 2's and no other numbers!

0 Guest
Use two 2's and standard mathematical symbols (+,-,*,:,.,^,(),sqrt) to make 5. 2:+2=5 2: means 1+2, is that right
0 Guest
Does the numbers (2 and 5) and the mathematical symbol (* / - + ^ () ...) follow the same function and have the same value as in actual maths. I mean, can we assume these symbols performing functions other than there actual ones? Please clarify.
0 Guest
Can this be a: (2 * 5)/2 => Cancel out 2 from the nominator and the denominator, what remains is 5 Well, its not exactly an equation but, i guess it fullfills the requirements... Please tell me if it is correct..even if it is not..i am satisfied to be contributing..

(2 * 5)/2 => Cancel out 2 from the nominator and the denominator, what remains is 5 OP says: Use two 2's and standard mathematical symbols (+,-,*,:,.,^,(),sqrt) to make 5. Although your solution looks nice, you use an additional 5 to make 5. I suppose frenchch1's answer is the unique correct one: sqrt(.2^-2)
0 Guest
Could you flip one 2 to make a seven and subtract 2 from that two make
0 Guest
Yes, all symbols operate normally. : means divide (same as /). If you're stumped, check frenchcs1's solution. He got the correct answer.
0 Guest
2/2+2*2 = 5 that would work but you can only have two 2's and answer was already found anyway
0 Guest
i believe you can only use 2 2's and no additional numbers if you round this is it ((2+2)!)sqrt nevermind check frenches post for correct answer Edited January 5, 2009 by Missionary
0 bonanova
Under the same conditions, then, it's trivial to make a 2, using just a 5 and a 2?
