Here's a nice little number sequence I thought up, hope it's not been done before!

1, 3, 4, 7, 6, 12, 8, 15, 13, 18...

What's the next number in the sequence?

12?

But only if 1, 2, 2, 3, 2, 4, 2, 4, 3, 4, 2, ... is a related sequence.

Answering a riddle with a riddle. And no, I won't show my work. B))

Of course it is! I knew I could count on you to solve that one :D

But you should demand a reason - from someone - before declaring this solved, no? ;)
Nah, you obviously figured it out. Answering a riddle with a riddle means anyone else looking at it still has to figure it out for themselves.

My students and I need a hint. I posted this as last week's "Puzzle of the Week", and the most popular answer was 17, with not so much mathematical justification. No kids answered 12 ... and the secondary "riddle" just confused things ..help us!

it has to do with the factors of numbers.

Oooooo! I got it!!!

Hah! I do like this one ... makes me feel smart!

Here's another hint ...

Yup, it's about factors. But, rather than comparing each member of the sequence to the previous term in the sequence, make yourself a table:

1 -- 1

2 -- 3

3 -- 4

4 -- 7

5 -- 6

6 -- 12

and so on ... I think you'll see it!
