This might be silly but

could it be a plant or an insect (like a bee for example - their venom can be used as cure, but it can also cause an anaphylactic shock) I don't know how to fit that in straight?

I dont think this is going anywhere so here is

Its an object.

The first two lines stand alone and describe the object,

The last two describe another object that uses the answer. Think resting in summer.

A Rope tied in a KNOT. A noose can definately kill you. And a hammock in summer is a great place to rest. I can't get the rest to fit though

yeah! and its straight (kind of) but you can twist and bend it.

That's it! the answer is Rope. it can be straight or not (Knot), it gives life to moutain climbers or people stuck in a big hole, death to people being hung, and its one of the key ingredients in a hammock.
