Wood - more like a twig :D

When it's dead it dries up and becomes brittle. making loud noises when you step on it ;)

Leaf or Rusty Vehicle (if engine dies it would keep trying to fire up)

Since I love to eat my

potato chips

When the potato is still 'alive' when you take a bite you can hardly hear anything, but when it's processed (what's the word) it's crunchy

Let me know if my guess is any good! ;)

Anything living is going to be brittle when it dies and the moisture takes a permanent vacation. For the riddle it helps if the living thing is a plant since they do not make much noise while alive. Except for the ones that talk to me.

The answer is clearly a really quiet guy who died and turned into a zombie. Zombies are brittle, but they're always moaning really loudly. And yes, I would know that.

Maybe I've just been playing too much Left 4 Dead...

I don't think that would work cuz they're pretty noisy when they're alive too. for example when there is a strong wind don't you hear thta wierd kind of whoosh noise that is leaves
