5. _____ (something blue) = 74

6. _____ (subsidy) = 161

7. _____ (demonstrate) = 157

8. _____ (law enforcer) = 145

9. _____ (sweet) = 113

10. _____ (steal) = 142

11. _____ (hit) = 170

12. _____ (something people shop for) = 214

20. _____ (mystical creature) = 233

21. _____ (spice) = 115

22. _____ (experienced) = 151

23. _____ _____ (team athletic event) = 317

The values are the same regardless of the language.

I actually came up with this method as part of a prank my freshmen year in college...

I had a friend from Austin, Texas who was really homesick and always complaining about how Austin was so much better...so when he went home for spring break we broke into his room and pranked it. We also changed the combination to his door so that he wouldn't be able to get in when he got back.

To help him figure out his new combination, we left a textbook from one of our freshmen classes outside his door with a sticky note that said "find your way H-O-M-∑".

Yeah...he had a nice surprise when he got back from the airport at 3am...;P

Yeah,

different languages not affect the values?

Some of these seem like they would be pretty easy, I just don't get the values.

The clue is in octave (base of 8). If A = 1, B =2 ....., Z = 26, then AUSTIN = 1+21+....14 = 84. Change to base-8, 84 = 124.

So Banana is only = 33 which convert to octave = 41.

78 indicates that the decimal form should be have the total number of 64. So far the nearest I can found is "Longan" which only score 63.

Unless my assumption is totally wrong from the begining.

Well, the value can't have anything to do with the letters, I THINK, because the language it's in doesn't matter.

hello everyone,

1. ambrosia_____ (fruit) = 78

This might just be a lucky shot but I think I'm onto something..

If languages doesn't matter it must be words that's used in all of them?

I am with you for the first stage. As what I have explain in my previous mail.

However, that doesn't explain on how you get Austin = 124. You should only got 84 for Austin.

You missed the second stage and as a result, Ambrosia which is giving 78 should not be the right answer.

Anyway this is just my thought.

The last letter in the series H-O-M-E(under back story and other hints), the E is in Greek...which has a value of 200...must have something to do with it...

BTW...my first post... :D

I think the puzzle uses the periodic table to get the numbers for the solutions. This explains the language requirement of the puzzle because elements are the same letters regardless of language. So for instance: Austin becomes Au (silver, number 79), S (sulfur, number 16) Ti (titanium, number 22) and N (nitrogen, number 7). 79+16+22+7=124

So for the rest of the puzzle, simply try to find words that fit this system for the clues.

The first answer would thus be

banana=78 Ba (barium 56) Na (sodium 11) Na (sodium 11). 56+11+11=78

Wow, ur totally right thymus... i believe this is the right way 2 find the answers...

Also i found SKY for (somethin blue) which is in the periodic table: S=16, K=19, Y=39 which sum to 74

GOOD JOB THYMUS I'm empressed

5. Sky (something Blue)=74 S(16)+K(19)+Y(39)=74

7. Show (demonstrate)=157 S(16)+Ho(67)+W(74)=157

8. Police (law enforcer) Po(84)+Li(3)+Ce(58)=145

Good luck with the rest of them, I find that these are a LOT easier to make than to solve :)

I am off to get some much needed sleep.

Wow! That's make sense. And now we know how to solve it one by one.

Thank you
