You must have to think pretty far outta the box for the one...

1 doesn't equal 1

lol jk

maybe "one" doesn't equal "1"

Lol that was funny, but it's not the answer that I'm looking for.

To akaslickster and = W =: Not the answers I'm looking for

By the way, the riddle is just based purely on numbers. So, it's not related to anything living or any inanimate objects.

this could be more of a philosophical question...?

will the sun set tonight?

if someone believes something then is it true?

does 1 really equal 1 or does it equal 0.8468

The last one is somewhat close, so I'll just put the answer in a spoiler.

It's like a "Well, technically..." kind of problem.

1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 1

but if I change the 1/3s into decimals it would be...

(repeating) .3333 + .3333 + .3333 = .9999

Although, logically it's rounded to 1.

The answer is in the post before yours. Most likely we posted at the same time so that's why you didn't see it at first, but I'll repost it.

There's no rounding.

1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 1

1/3 = .333...

.333... + .333... + .333... = .999...

.999... = 1

And the = sign is never used loosely in mathematics. .999... exactly = 1.

I tried to get a discussion going about this in the "Others" forum once, but it didn't take off.

I'll close this thread and you can resurrect that thread if you wish to continue a discussion, since this thread is not clear on what you'd like to discuss until page 2.

BTW, your riddle is not about 1 not equaling 1. If you're going to say that .999... does not equal 1, then you still haven't shown why 1 doesn't equal 1.
