Question

Here's a little odd-one-out teaser for you all:

Four groups of critters, four critters in each group...

1) badger, bat, panda, weasel

2) goose, rhea, tern, stork

3) boar, cow, chicken, dog

4) beetle, earwig, flea, worm

There's an odd one out in each group.

But which group is the odd one out?

just kidding

The odd one's out are:

Group 1: Bat (Only one that can fly)

Group 2: Rhea (Only one that can't fly)

Group 3: Chicken (Only that can fly)

Group 4: Worm (Only one without without legs)

Group 4 is the odd one out, they are the only group without animals.

Many answers to this. In addition to the above:

1)Panda, only herbivore

2)Rhea, cant fly

3)Chicken, not a mammal

4)Worm, not an insect.

group 4 is the odd one odd because:

group of invertibrates, all others are vertibrates

Group 1 is the odd one out since they are all mammals. None of the rest of the groups contain all mammals. But they are all, of course, animals.

I didn't have a group for fish, so I made sure to compensate by including a few red herrings. But you'll know when you've got it right! So far no-one has...

Well, it's past my bed-time, so you're on your own for a few hours. No correct answers yet. Keep trying people!

only line #2 has one-syllable words as well and all our types of fowl only.
Sorry, no, though I'm surprised no-ones got it yet.

Oh by the way when I said no correct answers so far obviously some people may have correctly guessed some of the odd ones out, but the right answer for the wrong reason still aint the right answer in my book, when you've got a 1 in 4 chance. Probably goes without saying anyway...

Really am going to bed now. Nighty night.

You're all missing something I'm afraid! There's so many ways you can pick an odd one out in each group, or a group that is somehow different to the others, that you'd have to reject most of them as being too arbitrary. Except one...

If it carries on like this I might have to leave a hint!

Was ok till last line Misanthrope or can i cal you ann?

All are animals unless ti's be redefined in the last 30 years to exclude insects and hermaphrodites - all reproduce, eat, breath!

By the way pls use a spoiler - it's in the drop down list

I'm not saying anyone's wrong exactly, but nobody's got it right yet (or even close).

Here's a guideline to help filter things out a bit:

You couldn't find the odd group without knowing the odd one out in each group. The two things are interrelated.

Octopuppy likes structured puzzles!

Good luck...

I don't think I gave anything away there, just cut down on the number of wrong answers posted! I had hoped people would assume that much from the OP anyway, though I guess the only one making an assumption there was me.

Odd ones out: bat, rhea chicken worm - for reasons given

That leaves:

[1] badger panda weasel - BPW

[2] goose tern stork - GTS

[3] boar cow dog - BCD

[4] beetle earwig fles - BEF

[3] is odd group out - only one with contiguous alphabetical initials.

Would I give you an odd one out which simply had a property the others didn't? But I can see wheels are turning, surely it won't be long now...

odd group out is the same group consisting odd critter out? Bat, Rhea, Chicken, worm. This is from a book. So? Maybe the largest animals are out and they create the odd group.

Line two has no RN
What do you mean by RN? (I presume its got nothing to do with the Royal Navy, random numbers or runny noses)

The odd group out is one of the four groups listed. And if it's from a book it's not any book that I've read.

I can't use spoilers. Sorry. ^_^

Group 1- Bat, not of the order carnivora

Group 2- Rhea, can't fly

Group 3- Chicken, not a mammal

Group 4- Worm, not an insect

Group 2 is the odd one out because it is the only one in which the odd critter out is not determined by classification.

I like your thinking! Probably the best answer so far. But not the right one I'm afraid.
