Question

A detective is walking by an apartment building when he hears, "Jack no!" and a gun shot. He rushes up the stair to see what has happened. When he arrives on the scene, he sees a woman, dead on the ground, a gun on the floor, and a doctor, a firefighter, and a police officer sitting on the couch. The detective immediately arrests the police officer. How did he know that it was the police officer who committed the crime?

I don't know about firefighters, and doctors are pretty inconsistent about this, but every police officer I've seen has his or her name on the badge, or somewhere on the uniform. Also, the detective could have known the police officer in a professional capacity, and that the officer's name was Jack.

1) How does he know its a doctor? A firefighter and policeman I can understand because they might be wearing uniforms, but doctors don't typically wear they're work clothes outside of a hospital.

2) A woman shouting a mans name means that he is about to shoot her? Absurdity.

3) The detectives immediate response is to pick up the gun. I know I'm being a little picky but once I get started it's hard to stop.

It's a good idea for a puzzle, just needs some work to fill in the holes

If it were not the police officer who committed the crime, then usually an officer would've arrested the suspect. Since he made no arrest, and sat on the couch, he must've done the crime himself.

Here's food for thought on puzzle solving:

The OP does not say that the detective knew their occupations.

Nor does the solution rest on his knowing them.

The OP tells the solver what their jobs were.

Take the conditions of the puzzle as given, and try to find an

answer that does not contradict them. If it turns out then that

the OP led you astray, have at it...! Kindly. ;)
