Question

Moving only one element, make the following expression true:

DX = IX

Adding one element, make the following expression true:

IX = VI

In both cases exclude the obvious method of transforming the equal sign into the inequality sign.

My friend Jacques solved the first one, my friend John solved the second.

Are you allowed to introduce other mathematical operators? Otherwise I don't see how the statement could ever be true with a D on only one side.

You're not allowed to introduce other math operators. But please consider the meaning of the Hint.

Well I've been considering away for a good 20 minutes now, and you've got me stumped. I concluded that there must be something more to it than just roman numeral math, since there aren't any standard solutions to the problems, as far as I can tell (there's really only one right way to write any given roman numeral, so no matter how you rearranged the figures, it would be impossible to end up with a correct solution, if that's all this is to it). Besides, your hint suggests something more outside the box in nature anyhow. So, I've been playing with measurement and monetary conversions used in France, Italy, the UK, and the U.S., to no avail. I tried time zone conversions, since one might argue that 500=100 if you look at the numbers as indicators of time, but I still can't make anything work out of that. Hopefully, if nobody figures it out in the next day, you can provide a bit more revealing clue.

X = DIX in French dix = ten

SIX = VI

Pretty easy once I read the hint.

the first problem:

DX = IX

think of them as variables, not as roman numberals

dx = ix

can be rearranged to:

d = ix/x

to simulate that fraction, move the X underneath the other X :P

the second problem:

IX = VI

you didnt specify what sorts of elements you can add. I'm adding a letter:

SIX = VI

Nice. Yeah, I'm kicking myself. Unfortunately, I spent almost all my thought on the first one, rather than the second, but I don't know a bit of French, so I wasn't getting anywhere. If I had started with the second one, perhaps I would have figured it out. Yeah, I'll just keep telling myself that until I feel better. 5 stars.
